Australia’s scramble to keep the lights on for artificial intelligence has attracted an unlikely new suitor from the other side of the Yellow Sea. Hoban Group, one of South Korea’s larger privately held construction and development houses, has confirmed that its president toured the country to weigh up investments in the power infrastructure that increasingly decides where AI gets built.
According to a report in the Korean business daily Asia Business, Hoban president Daehun Kim conducted on-site management in Australia, a Korean corporate custom in which senior leaders inspect prospective sites in person rather than signing off from head office. The stated target is Oceania’s AI power infrastructure, the grid connections, generation and land that data centre operators now compete for as fiercely as they once did for cheap fibre.
Why a builder is chasing electrons
On paper, Hoban is a housing and civil engineering group best known in Korea for apartment developments, golf courses and a sprawling portfolio of property assets. Yet the logic of pivoting toward power is not as strange as it first appears. The hardest part of standing up a hyperscale data centre is no longer the servers or the software. It is securing enough megawatts, and securing them in a location where the grid can actually deliver, where planning approvals are achievable, and where the surrounding land can host substations, cooling and, increasingly, on-site generation.
That is a construction and land problem as much as a technology one, which is precisely the sort of work a group like Hoban has spent decades doing. Korean conglomerates have watched their own domestic market tighten, with Seoul’s grid straining under data centre demand and local communities resisting new builds. Looking abroad for greenfield capacity is a natural next move, and Australia sits high on the list because it combines abundant land, a stable legal system and a policy push toward renewable generation that AI operators want to be seen buying.

There is also the harder question of who benefits. If offshore investors capture the land and the grid connections that AI needs, Australian operators and communities can end up renting access to their own backyard. The debate over whether locals should live near data centres at all, a fight already playing out in regional New South Wales and Victoria, only sharpens when the landlord is based overseas.
What it means for Australia
Hoban’s scouting trip lands at a moment when energy has become the binding constraint on the nation’s AI ambitions. State governments from Queensland to Western Australia are courting data centre investment as a jobs and revenue story, while planning authorities and network operators wrestle with the reality that a single hyperscale campus can draw as much power as a small city. Regional towns such as Wagga Wagga have started marketing themselves as data centre hubs, and the economics of who owns the surrounding generation will shape whether that promised prosperity actually stays local.
A Korean entrant also broadens the geopolitics of the buildout. Much of the recent debate has focused on American cloud giants and on the security risks of Chinese-linked technology in sensitive infrastructure. South Korea sits in a more comfortable diplomatic position as a close partner and fellow democracy, which may make Hoban a more palatable investor to regulators than some rivals. Even so, the same national interest test applies, and the group will need to convince Canberra that its involvement strengthens rather than hollows out sovereign control of the grid.

The immediate question is whether Hoban’s reconnaissance converts into a concrete proposal, and if so, in which state and alongside which local partner. Korean developers rarely move into a foreign market alone, so a joint venture with an Australian energy or property group would be the logical vehicle, and any deal of scale would trigger a Foreign Investment Review Board assessment. Watch too for whether the group targets renewable generation and storage, which would align neatly with the federal government’s clean energy agenda, or leans toward grid-connected land plays that are quicker to monetise but harder to sell politically.
Either way, the arrival of a Korean builder in the hunt for Oceania’s AI power is a reminder that the contest for Australia’s digital future is being fought less over chips and models and more over megawatts, land and the unglamorous business of getting them connected. For a construction group, that is familiar ground, even if the customer has changed.
