AI mania set to power Australian deal boom, Macquarie says

Australia’s busiest deal machine reckons the artificial intelligence frenzy sweeping global markets is about to arrive in force on local balance sheets. Macquarie Group, the country’s top equity underwriter, has told Bloomberg that enthusiasm for AI will help drive a fresh cycle of mergers, floats and capital raisings across the domestic market, with everything from data centres to the power needed to run them feeding the pipeline.

The prediction carries weight because of who is making it. Macquarie has topped the league tables for equity capital markets in Australia, which means it sits closer than almost anyone to the flow of takeovers, block trades and initial public offerings that define a given year. When its bankers say the phones are about to start ringing, the market tends to listen.

What Macquarie is actually saying

The core of the argument is straightforward. The scramble to build and power AI systems has become the dominant theme in global capital markets, and that theme is now reshaping how companies think about acquisitions, expansion and where to park their cash. Data centres, the warehouses of computing that make large language models possible, need land, chips, water and vast amounts of electricity. Each of those requirements creates a potential transaction, whether that is a company buying a rival, a developer raising equity to fund a build, or an investor taking a stake in the infrastructure that underpins it all.

Australia has already shown early signs of exactly this dynamic. Local and offshore investors have been circling data centre operators, energy assets and the grid connections that make new capacity viable. Macquarie’s view is that these one-off moves are the leading edge of something broader, a multi-year run of dealmaking in which AI is less a single sector and more a force acting on many at once, from real estate and utilities to telecommunications and financial services.

It is worth noting the self-interest at play, and Macquarie would be the first to acknowledge it. More deals mean more advisory and underwriting fees, and an investment bank talking up a deal boom is a bit like a surf shop talking up the swell. That does not make the call wrong, but it is a reason to weigh it against other voices rather than take it as gospel.

The bull case and the sceptics

On the optimistic side, the logic is hard to dismiss. Global technology giants are committing hundreds of billions of dollars to AI infrastructure, and that spending has to land somewhere physical. Australia offers political stability, reliable legal frameworks, ample land and, in some regions, access to renewable energy that hyperscalers increasingly demand. For a bank positioned to advise on the resulting transactions, the setup looks close to ideal.

The sceptics come at it from two directions. The first worry is valuation. If AI enthusiasm inflates the prices companies pay for assets, some of those deals will look reckless in hindsight, and a wave of dealmaking driven by fear of missing out has a habit of ending badly for the buyers. The second worry is the durability of the underlying boom itself. A growing chorus of analysts has questioned whether the sums being poured into AI infrastructure can ever generate the returns needed to justify them, and if that scepticism hardens into a broad repricing, the deal pipeline Macquarie is describing could thin out quickly.

There is also the practical constraint of power. Australia’s electricity grid is already under strain, and data centres are extraordinarily hungry consumers. A rush of new projects that cannot secure firm, affordable energy may stall before any deal is signed, which puts a natural ceiling on how fast the boom can run.

Why this matters for Australia

For the local market, the stakes are significant. A sustained lift in mergers and capital raisings would ripple well beyond the banks that arrange them. It would mean more work for lawyers, accountants and advisers, more activity on the ASX, and potentially a wave of new listings that gives superannuation funds and retail investors fresh ways to gain exposure to the AI theme without buying offshore stocks.

It also feeds directly into a debate the country is already having about whether Australia is building enough of its own digital infrastructure or simply hosting other people’s. Regional centres from Wagga Wagga to the outskirts of the major cities have been positioning themselves as data centre hubs, chasing the jobs and investment that come with them. If Macquarie is right, that competition is about to intensify, and the transactions that decide who owns and controls this infrastructure will shape the sector for a decade.

The flip side is concentration risk. If a large share of the coming deal flow clusters around a single theme, the market becomes more exposed to a change in sentiment about that theme. Australian investors who lived through previous booms in mining and, more recently, in speculative technology floats know how quickly a hot sector can cool, and how painful the correction can be for those who arrived late.

What happens next

The immediate test will be whether the talk translates into announced transactions over the coming months. Watch for movement among data centre operators, energy retailers and generators, and infrastructure funds, as these are the most obvious beneficiaries of AI-linked demand. Any large capital raising tied to a data centre build, or a takeover offer for an operator with existing capacity, would be an early confirmation that Macquarie’s forecast is playing out.

Regulators and policymakers will be watching too. A surge in foreign interest in critical digital and energy infrastructure raises questions about ownership, national security and grid access that Canberra has been grappling with in other contexts. How the Foreign Investment Review Board and energy authorities respond to a rush of AI-driven bids could shape both the pace and the character of the boom.

For now, the message from the country’s leading dealmaker is that the AI story is moving off the screens of technology investors and into the deal rooms of corporate Australia. Whether that becomes a durable cycle or a short, sharp spike will depend on power, prices and whether the enthusiasm outlasts the hype.
