AI is the new climate change, argues Spectator column

Every generation seems to find a single issue big enough to swallow the whole of public life, and for the better part of two decades that issue in Australia was climate change. It framed elections, split the Coalition, launched careers and ended them, and turned the humble kilowatt-hour into a moral question. Now a new contender has arrived, and according to a recent column in The Spectator Australia, artificial intelligence is fast becoming the new climate change.

The comparison is deliberately pointed. The argument, broadly, is that AI has taken on the same cultural weight climate once carried: a technology talked about in the language of salvation and apocalypse at the same time, wrapped in government strategies and summits, backed by enormous public and private money, and increasingly immune to sceptical questions. Where climate gave us net zero targets and renewable roadmaps, AI is giving us national capability plans, sovereign compute ambitions and warnings that any country slow to adopt will be left behind. The column’s suggestion is that the hype has outrun the evidence, and that a healthy dose of scepticism is being treated as heresy.

Why the parallel lands

There is a reason the analogy resonates in Australia in particular, and it comes down to electricity. The thing that makes modern AI possible is not just clever code but staggering amounts of computing power, and that power runs on the grid. Training and running large models means building data centres, and data centres are among the hungriest customers the electricity network has ever seen. This is where the two supposedly separate stories, climate and AI, collide directly.

Australia is in the middle of an extraordinary build-out of AI infrastructure. Recent months have brought a run of announcements that would have been unthinkable a few years ago, from multi-billion dollar commitments to so-called AI factories to funding rounds aimed at standing up local compute capacity. Each of those projects has to be plugged into a grid that is simultaneously trying to shift from coal to renewables while keeping the lights on and bills under control. The result is a genuine tension. The country has spent years arguing about how to decarbonise its power system, and now a new industry has turned up wanting more of that power than almost anyone anticipated.

That is the serious core beneath the provocative headline. If AI demand pushes up electricity consumption faster than renewable capacity can be added, someone has to decide who gets priority and who pays. Households already nervous about power prices may not warm to the idea that a share of new generation is being soaked up by warehouses full of servers. It is exactly the kind of trade-off that made climate policy so combustible, and it is now being asked of AI.

Two ways to read the claim

Read one way, the column is a useful corrective. Boosters have a habit of describing AI as an unstoppable force of nature, which conveniently shuts down debate about cost, energy, jobs and who actually benefits. Comparing that rhetoric to the more overheated moments of the climate debate is a fair reminder that no technology is beyond scrutiny, and that public money poured into fashionable causes does not always deliver what the brochures promise. Plenty of economists and technologists share the worry that expectations for AI have run well ahead of measurable productivity gains.

Read another way, the parallel can be pushed too far. Climate change is a physical phenomenon with a settled scientific basis, whatever one thinks of any particular policy response. AI is a set of commercial technologies whose long-term impact is genuinely uncertain, which makes scepticism easier to justify but also makes sweeping dismissals just as risky as sweeping hype. The lesson from the climate years may be less that everyone was fooled and more that treating a complex issue as a single moral test, with heroes on one side and villains on the other, produces bad policy in both directions. That caution cuts against boosters and sceptics alike.

What it means for Australia

For Australia the stakes are unusually concrete, because this is not an abstract culture war. The federal government has been assembling an AI agenda, industry groups have been lobbying hard, and state governments are competing for data-centre investment the way they once competed for car plants. At the same time the energy transition remains the defining infrastructure project of the decade. Whether those two agendas can be reconciled is a live question, and it is one Canberra will have to answer with real numbers rather than slogans.

There is also a fiscal dimension that echoes the climate era. Just as governments underwrote renewables with subsidies, incentives and guarantees, there is growing pressure to support local AI capability with public backing, from research grants to favourable treatment for sovereign compute. If AI really is the new climate change, then part of what the analogy predicts is a long argument about how much taxpayers should chip in, and what they get in return. Australians have been down that road before, and they tend to remember how it went.

The comparison also carries a warning about complacency. One of the criticisms levelled at the climate debate was that grand targets were set for distant dates while the hard engineering lagged behind. AI risks the same gap. It is easy to announce a strategy and much harder to secure the transmission lines, the water for cooling, the skilled workers and the reliable baseload that the industry quietly depends on. If those foundations are not built, the lofty language will collide with the same physical limits that have dogged the energy transition.

What’s next

The most likely outcome is not that the analogy wins or loses, but that the questions it raises become harder to avoid. Expect the energy cost of AI to move from the business pages to the front pages, especially as more data-centre projects seek grid connections and the numbers become public. Expect regulators and network operators to start publishing clearer figures on how much new demand is coming and where it will land. And expect the political framing to sharpen, with one side casting AI as national destiny and the other casting it as an expensive fad dressed up as inevitability.

Whether or not readers accept that AI is the new climate change, the column has done something worthwhile by insisting the comparison be taken seriously. Australia spent a long time learning that energy policy is where lofty ambitions meet hard reality. It is about to learn the same lesson about artificial intelligence, and the grid will be where the argument is settled.
