Every generation seems to find a single issue big enough to swallow the whole of public life, and for the better part of two decades that issue in Australia was climate change. It framed elections, split the Coalition, launched careers and ended them, and turned the humble kilowatt-hour into a moral question. And expect the political framing to sharpen, with one side casting AI as national destiny and the other casting it as an expensive fad dressed up as inevitability.
