Inside GXAI, the ASX-listed fund betting on 85 AI companies

For Australians who believe artificial intelligence is the defining investment story of the decade but have no appetite for picking individual winners, the fund industry has an answer ready to go. It is a single line on the Australian Securities Exchange that bundles dozens of the world’s AI-exposed companies into one trade.

That product is the Global X Artificial Intelligence ETF, which trades under the ticker GXAI. A recent profile of the fund published by Kalkine walked through the mechanics of the strategy: roughly 85 holdings spanning artificial intelligence and big data, wrapped in an exchange traded fund that ordinary investors can buy and sell as easily as a share in the big four banks.

What the fund is actually trying to do

The pitch behind GXAI is thematic rather than geographic. Instead of tracking a broad index like the ASX 200 or the S&P 500, the fund sets out to capture companies that stand to benefit from the build-out and adoption of artificial intelligence. That net is cast wide on purpose. It reaches the obvious names, the chip designers and hyperscale cloud operators that dominate headlines, but it also pulls in the less glamorous plumbing of the AI economy: data analytics firms, software vendors, hardware suppliers and the businesses that store and move the enormous volumes of information these systems consume.

The “big data” half of the mandate matters here, because it broadens the fund well beyond the handful of megacaps that most people picture when they hear the phrase artificial intelligence. A portfolio of around 85 companies is diversified enough to spread single-stock risk, yet concentrated enough to still behave like a bet on one theme rather than the whole market. That is the balance thematic funds try to strike, and it is the reason products like this have proliferated on the ASX over the past few years.

For a domestic investor, the appeal is straightforward. The Australian sharemarket is heavy on banks, miners and supermarkets, and desperately thin on the kind of large-scale technology companies that are driving the global AI trade. There is no local equivalent of Nvidia or Microsoft to buy. A fund like GXAI offers a way to plug that gap from within a familiar brokerage account, without wrestling with United States tax paperwork or currency conversion at the point of trade.

The bull case

Supporters of thematic AI funds argue the structural tailwind is real and durable. Global spending on data centres, chips and enterprise software has run well ahead of expectations, and the companies supplying that infrastructure have delivered some of the strongest earnings growth on any exchange. A basket approach lets an investor participate in that growth without having to correctly guess which specific firm ends up on top, a call that has humbled plenty of professional stock pickers.

Diversification is the other half of the argument. If one holding stumbles on a disappointing result or a regulatory setback, its impact on an 85-stock portfolio is diluted. That is a meaningfully different risk profile from putting a large slice of savings into a single high-flying name, which is what many retail investors were doing at the peak of the enthusiasm around chipmakers.

The bear case

The counter-argument is just as important, and Australians who have watched previous technology cycles will recognise it. Thematic funds tend to launch and gather assets precisely when a theme is already hot, which means buyers can end up paying rich valuations for companies whose future growth is already priced in. When sentiment turns, concentrated thematic products can fall harder and faster than the broad market, as several AI-linked names demonstrated during the sharp pullbacks earlier in the cycle.

Cost is a live consideration too. Thematic ETFs typically charge higher management fees than plain index funds, and over a long holding period those fees compound against returns. There is also the question of what “artificial intelligence exposure” really means once a portfolio stretches to 85 companies. The further a fund reaches for holdings, the more it risks diluting the very theme it is selling, ending up with a collection of general technology stocks under an AI badge. Investors should read the holdings list rather than the label.

Currency is the final wrinkle. A fund weighted heavily towards United States companies carries exposure to the Australian dollar, which has been volatile against the greenback. A stronger local currency can quietly erode returns even when the underlying shares are rising, unless the product is currency hedged.

What it means for Australia

The rise of funds like GXAI reflects a wider truth about the local market: Australian investors want a stake in the AI boom, but the ASX itself offers slim pickings when it comes to pure-play exposure. That demand has turned the exchange into a shopfront for globally focused thematic products, giving self-managed super funds and everyday investors access to companies they could never easily hold directly.

It also underlines the strategic gap policymakers keep circling back to. While Australians pour money into offshore AI leaders through vehicles like this, the domestic industry is still working to build sovereign capability, from data centres to homegrown software. The enthusiasm for AI as an investment theme is running well ahead of the country’s ability to supply that theme with local champions, and that imbalance has consequences for where the eventual profits accrue.

What is next

Thematic AI funds will keep multiplying on the ASX for as long as the underlying trade holds up, and GXAI is one option among a growing shelf that includes broader technology indices and more targeted plays. The sensible course for anyone tempted is the unglamorous one: look past the ticker and the marketing, check the fees, read the actual holdings, understand the currency exposure, and size the position to sit comfortably alongside the rest of a portfolio rather than dominating it. Artificial intelligence may well be the story of the decade. That does not mean every fund promising exposure to it will be the right way to own it.
