RBA pushes rates to 18-year high as AI stokes price pressures

Interest rates have long been the blunt instrument Australia reaches for whenever prices run hot, and for the better part of two years households have worn the consequences. Now a fresh twist has entered the debate. According to a report published by TOKENPOST, the Reserve Bank of Australia has lifted its cash rate to an 18-year high, and the surge in spending tied to artificial intelligence is being folded into the explanation for why inflation has proved so stubborn.

The framing matters because it marks a shift in how the AI boom is being discussed. For most of the past year the technology has been cast as a story about productivity, white-collar job losses and sharemarket euphoria. The idea that AI could also be feeding directly into the cost of living, and therefore into the rates every mortgage holder pays, moves the conversation from the business pages to the kitchen table.

What the report says

You can read the original item, headlined “Australia’s RBA Raises Rate to 18-Year High Amid AI Price Pressures”, via GNews here. The thrust is that the central bank’s tightening cycle has pushed borrowing costs to levels not seen since before the global financial crisis, and that the cost pressures associated with the AI build-out are being cited among the forces keeping inflation elevated.

That connection is not as abstract as it first sounds. The infrastructure underpinning AI, from the data centres that house the chips to the electricity that keeps them cool, is enormously expensive and hungry for power. When demand for energy, construction labour, specialised equipment and real estate all climbs at once, the effect shows up in prices across the wider economy. A central bank watching inflation does not get to separate the clean-tech-adjacent spending it approves of from the broad demand pressure it is trying to tame. It sees the aggregate, and it responds with the only lever it has.

Two ways to read it

There are competing interpretations, and both deserve a hearing. The first treats AI-linked spending as a genuine and growing source of inflationary pressure. On this view, the scramble to build data centres and secure the energy to run them is adding real demand to already tight markets for power and construction, and the Reserve Bank is right to factor it in. Australia’s own experience lends some weight to the argument, with energy costs and the strain on the electricity grid already flagged repeatedly as the AI rollout accelerates.

The second reading is more sceptical. It holds that pinning rate rises on AI risks turning a convenient new villain into a scapegoat for inflation that is really driven by older and more familiar culprits: services costs, rents, insurance, wage pressure and the long tail of pandemic-era disruption. Data centres remain a small slice of total economic activity, and critics of the AI-inflation thesis would argue that the technology’s price impact, while real at the margin, is being overstated because it makes for a compelling headline. The honest position probably sits between the two. AI is a contributor, not the cause, and the size of that contribution is still being argued over by economists.

The Reserve Bank’s leadership has been consistent in saying it will keep rates restrictive until it is confident inflation is heading sustainably back towards target. Governor Michele Bullock has repeatedly stressed that the bank is watching the full basket of price pressures rather than any single sector, which is exactly why a new demand source like AI infrastructure cannot simply be waved through as benign.

What it means for Australia

For Australian borrowers, the mechanics are painfully simple. A cash rate at an 18-year high means mortgage repayments at levels many households have never had to budget for, less disposable income flowing through to retailers, and a renewed squeeze on small businesses carrying debt. Every quarter-point feeds through to variable loans within weeks, and the cumulative weight of this cycle is already visible in soft consumer spending and a wary property market.

The AI dimension sharpens the dilemma for policymakers. Australia has been positioning itself as a serious destination for data-centre investment, with a steady run of building approvals and billions in planned capacity. That investment is welcome for jobs and for the country’s digital sovereignty, yet it lands on an economy with a chronic shortage of tradespeople and a grid under visible strain. If the very projects governments are courting also add to the inflation that keeps rates high, the trade-off becomes politically awkward. Build fast and risk stoking prices, or slow down and cede ground to rival hubs in Asia and the Middle East.

There is also a sovereignty angle that Australians should not lose sight of. Much of the AI spending that flows through the local economy ultimately rewards a handful of offshore chipmakers and cloud giants. If households are, in effect, helping to pay for that build-out through higher rates, the question of how much lasting value stays onshore becomes more than academic. Energy policy, grid investment and the push for local AI capability all sit inside that same equation.

What is next

The near-term test will be the Reserve Bank’s own commentary. Markets and borrowers alike will be parsing future statements for any sign that the bank sees AI-related demand as a structural feature of the inflation outlook rather than a passing blip. If it does, that would signal a longer period of restrictive policy than many had hoped, with rate relief pushed further out.

Beyond monetary policy, expect the energy and infrastructure debate to intensify. The more clearly AI’s appetite for power is linked to the cost of living, the harder it becomes for governments to treat data-centre approvals and electricity planning as separate conversations. Treasury, the states and the energy regulators will all be drawn into a discussion that was, until recently, the preserve of technology reporters. For a country trying to win AI investment while keeping a lid on prices, the balancing act is only going to get harder from here.
