Appliers.ai buys Prevail, names Pete Gatt as CTO

The scramble to turn artificial intelligence hype into something enterprises will actually pay for has set off a wave of consolidation across Australia’s consulting sector, and the latest deal lands squarely in Melbourne. Appliers.ai, a self-styled AI transformation specialist, has acquired the business and AI consultancy Prevail, folding a smaller advisory outfit into its ranks and reshuffling its leadership team in the process.

As part of the deal, Prevail co-founder Pete Gatt steps into the role of chief technology officer at Appliers.ai, while fellow co-founder Ben Ashby takes on the title of chief solutions officer. The arrangement, first reported by ARN, is pitched as a way for the acquirer to deepen its enterprise capabilities as demand for AI-led business transformation gathers pace.

From pilot projects to plumbing

To understand why a Melbourne firm would buy a consultancy for its people rather than its software, it helps to look at where the market has drifted over the past two years. The first phase of the generative AI boom was dominated by experiments. Companies stood up chatbots, ran proofs of concept, and quietly shelved most of them when the results failed to justify the cost. The second phase, the one unfolding now, is far less glamorous and far more valuable. It is about wiring AI into the unglamorous plumbing of a business: the claims process at an insurer, the rostering system at a hospital network, the reconciliation work inside a finance team.

That shift rewards a very particular kind of firm. Pure technology vendors can sell a model or a platform, but they often struggle to navigate the messy internal politics, legacy systems and change-management headaches that decide whether a project sticks. Traditional management consultancies understand the politics but can lack the hands-on engineering depth to ship working software. Appliers.ai is betting that the sweet spot sits between those two camps, and absorbing Prevail gives it more of the technical and advisory muscle needed to occupy it.

Why acquire rather than hire

The appointment of Gatt as chief technology officer is the telling detail. In a labour market where experienced AI engineers and architects are scarce and expensive, buying a team that already works well together is frequently cheaper and faster than assembling one hire by hire. Acqui-hires, as the practice is known in startup circles, let an acquirer skip months of recruitment and onboarding while locking in founders who have already proven they can win and deliver client work.

There is a risk to weigh against that logic. Integrating two consulting cultures is notoriously tricky, and the value of a firm like Prevail walks out the door every evening in the form of its staff. Retention bonuses, earn-outs and senior titles, like the C-suite roles handed to both co-founders here, are the usual tools for keeping talent in place long enough for the combined business to gel. Whether the enlarged Appliers.ai can hold onto those people once the ink dries will say a lot about the deal’s success.

A market thinning out

This is not an isolated move. Australia’s AI services landscape has become remarkably crowded, populated by boutique advisories, systems integrators and newly minted “AI-first” consultancies all chasing the same enterprise budgets. Consolidation is the natural next step, and FluentSea has tracked a string of comparable deals in recent months, from Avocado Consulting absorbing a rival AI advisory to XPON offloading its Datisan arm as applied-AI players reshuffle their portfolios. Brisbane’s V2 Digital has been bulking up its applied-AI leadership through senior hires rather than acquisitions, another sign that scale and specialist talent have become the currency of the moment.

The strategic reasoning is consistent across these transactions. Large corporate and government clients increasingly want a single partner that can take them from strategy through to deployment, rather than stitching together a strategy house, a data team and a software shop. Breadth sells. A standalone consultancy with a dozen staff can win proofs of concept, but it can struggle to land the multi-year transformation programs where the real money sits. Joining a bigger platform is one way to get into those rooms.

What it means for Australia

For Australian businesses weighing up their own AI plans, the steady consolidation is a double-edged sword. On the upside, a smaller field of better-resourced firms should mean more consultancies capable of handling end-to-end projects, with the governance, security and change-management experience that serious deployments demand. Local knowledge matters here too, given the regulatory scrutiny building around AI in sectors such as banking, health and the public service, where data sovereignty and the handling of personal information carry real legal weight.

On the downside, fewer independent players can mean less competitive tension on price and less variety in approach, particularly for small and mid-sized organisations that are not the priority for a firm now chasing enterprise-scale contracts. The companies most at risk of being underserved are precisely the ones that make up the bulk of the Australian economy.

There is also a broader signal in deals like this one. The willingness of Melbourne firms to buy rather than build points to genuine, bankable demand for AI transformation work in Australia, not just marketing froth. That is encouraging for a domestic industry that has at times looked like it was selling a future that never quite arrived. It also keeps skilled AI talent working inside Australian-owned businesses rather than drifting offshore or into the local arms of global giants.

What is next

The immediate test will be execution. Appliers.ai now has to blend two client bases, retain Prevail’s staff, and prove that the combined entity can deliver the kind of large transformation programs it is positioning itself for. Expect the enlarged firm to lean hard on the credentials of Gatt and Ashby as it pitches for bigger contracts, and expect rivals to respond with acquisitions or senior hires of their own.

If the current pattern holds, the Australian AI consulting market will look meaningfully more concentrated by this time next year. For clients, the firms left standing will be the ones that can show they turned the AI promise into measurable results, not just another round of pilots that quietly disappeared. The deals making headlines now are really a bet on which consultancies will still be standing when that reckoning comes.
