HEX launches WorkSim as AI reshapes entry-level jobs

For decades the first job out of study followed a familiar pattern. A graduate landed an entry-level role, spent a year or two doing the unglamorous groundwork of formatting slide decks, cleaning spreadsheets, drafting first-pass copy and summarising meetings, and learned the trade by osmosis. That apprenticeship rung is precisely the one artificial intelligence is now climbing fastest, and a Melbourne edtech company reckons it has built a way to replace the experience that is quietly disappearing with it.

HEX has launched WorkSim, a platform it describes as a workplace simulator that drops students into realistic, project-based scenarios modelled on the day-to-day of a modern office. Rather than sit through theory and hope the practical skills arrive later, students work through briefs, deadlines, stakeholders and the kind of ambiguous instructions that define real employment. The pitch is blunt: if AI is absorbing the tasks that used to teach beginners how work actually works, then the training ground has to be rebuilt deliberately rather than left to chance.

The headline validation for the launch is RMIT, which has enrolled more than 400 students on the platform and embedded it directly inside its Diploma of Business. That is not a pilot tucked away in an elective. Folding a third-party simulator into the spine of an accredited qualification signals that one of the country’s larger tertiary institutions sees the graduate-readiness gap as serious enough to redesign curriculum around it, as detailed in Tech Business News.

Why the entry-level rung is the one under pressure

The timing is not accidental. The tasks most exposed to generative AI are overwhelmingly the routine, text-and-data heavy jobs that have traditionally been handed to juniors precisely because they were low-risk and repetitive. When a model can draft the memo, build the first version of the financial model and tidy the dataset in seconds, the commercial logic for paying a graduate to learn by doing those same tasks weakens. Employers increasingly want people who can already operate at the level above, supervising the output of AI tools, exercising judgement and managing a piece of work end to end.

That creates an awkward chicken-and-egg problem for anyone leaving study. Roles that once existed to build experience are thinning out, yet the experience they conferred is now treated as a baseline expectation at the door. A simulator is one attempt to break that loop by manufacturing the hours of practice that the labour market no longer reliably provides. Students get to fail safely, make the mistakes that teach the most, and build a portfolio of completed work before they ever apply for a role.

Two ways to read it

Supporters of simulation-based learning argue this is exactly where vocational and higher education needs to go. Case studies and lectures can describe a workplace, but they cannot replicate the pressure of competing priorities or the muscle memory of iterating on something until it is good enough to ship. If AI has removed the natural on-ramp, the argument runs, then institutions have a duty to engineer a replacement rather than send graduates into a market that quietly assumes experience they were never given the chance to earn. Embedding WorkSim inside an accredited diploma rather than offering it as an optional extra is the strongest version of that bet.

Sceptics will push on whether any simulator, however well designed, can stand in for the messiness of a genuine workplace. Real jobs come with office politics, difficult clients, shifting budgets and consequences that matter, and there is a reasonable worry that a controlled environment teaches students to perform within the boundaries of the exercise rather than cope with genuine unpredictability. There is also a broader structural question that no edtech product can answer on its own. If employers continue to erode entry-level hiring because AI covers the work, then better-prepared graduates may simply be competing harder for a shrinking pool of first roles. A simulator improves the candidate; it does not create the vacancy.

What it means for Australia

This is a domestic story with national stakes. Australia’s graduate labour market has already been tightening, and youth underemployment has been a persistent feature even in years of otherwise strong jobs numbers. The country also leans heavily on international education as an export earner, and a large share of those students enrol specifically to improve their employability. If the entry-level pathway that justified much of that investment is being automated away, the pressure on universities, TAFEs and private providers to demonstrate tangible work-readiness becomes commercial as well as educational.

There is a policy dimension too. Governments at both state and federal level have been pouring money and rhetoric into AI skilling, usually framed around teaching people to use the tools. Less attention has gone to the quieter problem of what happens when the tools eat the jobs that used to train the workforce in the first place. A homegrown Melbourne company building infrastructure to rebuild that training ground, and a major university committing enrolments to it, is a useful signal that the sector is starting to treat the experience gap as a design problem rather than an individual’s bad luck.

What’s next

The number that matters now is outcomes. More than 400 RMIT students using WorkSim inside a live diploma gives HEX a sizeable cohort to track, and the credibility of the model will rest on whether those students land roles faster, perform better in their first months, or report that the simulated experience translated. If the results hold up, expect other institutions to follow, because no provider wants to be the one whose graduates arrive visibly less prepared. If they do not, the idea risks being filed alongside the long list of edtech products that promised to close a gap and quietly widened the gap between marketing and measurable benefit.

Either way, the launch crystallises a question that Australian educators and employers can no longer defer. As AI keeps climbing the task ladder, someone has to decide how the next generation learns to work at all. HEX is betting that the answer is to build the workplace before students ever step into one.
