For more than half a century, Western Australia has fought a quiet and unusually successful war against a small, glossy bird with an iridescent sheen and an appetite for almost anything. The European starling, one of the most damaging invasive species on the planet, has colonised much of eastern Australia but has never managed to establish a breeding population in the west. Keeping it that way has required decades of patrol, trapping and shooting along the vast and lonely stretch of coast and country near the South Australian border. Now that effort is getting a modern recruit, with the state launching an AI-powered program to help track the birds as they attempt to push westward.

Why one bird matters so much

To anyone who has only seen starlings flocking over an English field or roosting in a city centre, the alarm in Western Australia can seem out of proportion. The reality is that Sturnus vulgaris is a formidable coloniser. The species strips fruit crops, fouls grain stores and water supplies, competes aggressively with native birds for nesting hollows, and spreads readily once it finds a foothold. In the eastern states, where starlings have been entrenched since the nineteenth century, they are simply a fact of agricultural life. Western Australia, by contrast, sits in a rare and valuable position as one of the last substantial regions of the continent where the bird has been held at bay.

That status is not an accident. The state runs a long-standing surveillance and control operation along its eastern approaches, concentrated around the Esperance region and the coastal country that stretches toward the Nullarbor. Field officers have spent years locating small groups of birds that drift across from South Australia, then removing them before they can pair up and breed. The work is painstaking, expensive and heavily dependent on experienced eyes and ears covering an enormous and sparsely populated landscape.

The news: teaching machines to hear a starling

The new program brings artificial intelligence into that surveillance net. Rather than relying solely on officers spotting birds in the field, the approach uses acoustic monitoring and machine-learning models trained to recognise the distinctive calls and chatter of starlings among the broader soundscape of the bush. Recording devices placed across the risk zone can capture audio continuously, and the software sifts through it to flag the moments that warrant a closer look by a human expert. In effect, the technology acts as a tireless listener, scanning hours of birdsong that no team of people could ever review manually.

The appeal of that model is straightforward. A starling incursion is a numbers game won or lost at the earliest stage. A single undetected pair can become a colony, and a colony can become a permanent population that is effectively impossible to eradicate. By widening the area under constant observation and speeding up the detection of a stray call, the state hopes to catch arrivals sooner and dispatch officers to exactly the right spot rather than searching blind across hundreds of kilometres.

Promise and scepticism

Supporters of the approach argue that biosecurity is precisely the kind of problem AI should be pointed at. The task is repetitive, the volume of data is overwhelming for humans, and the cost of a single miss is enormous and permanent. Acoustic recognition has already proven itself in conservation settings elsewhere, used to monitor threatened frogs, bats and birds, so applying it to an unwanted species rather than a cherished one is a natural extension. For a program that must cover a huge area on a finite budget, a system that never tires and never looks away is an attractive proposition.

Others urge caution, and the caution is sensible rather than hostile. Acoustic AI is only as good as the data it is trained on, and the Australian bush is a noisy, varied place where the calls of native species, wind, insects and other birds can confuse a model. False positives risk sending officers on wild goose chases, while false negatives could create a dangerous sense of security if managers lean too heavily on the technology. The consistent message from those who work in the field is that AI is a tool to extend human judgement, not replace it. The machine narrows the search; a trained officer still has to confirm the bird, find it and remove it. There is also the practical question of maintaining recording equipment and connectivity across remote country where power and mobile coverage are thin.

What it means for Australia

The stakes here are national even though the frontline is in the west. Western Australia’s grain, horticulture and wine industries are worth billions of dollars a year, and much of that value rests on the state’s relatively clean pest and disease status. Starlings establishing in the west would not only damage crops directly but could complicate trade and add another permanent cost to farming in a state that has so far avoided it. The country’s broader biosecurity system, which also keeps watch for fruit fly, foot-and-mouth disease and a long list of other threats, increasingly looks to technology to stretch limited resources across a continent-sized task.

If AI-assisted acoustic monitoring proves itself against starlings, the method is readily transferable. The same basic technique, recording the environment and training a model to pick out a target, could be turned toward other invasive birds, feral animals or even the early sounds of pest incursions in ports and freight. It joins a growing list of Australian trials putting machine learning to work on environmental and agricultural problems, from drones tracking wild dogs to AI models watching for weeds and disease in crops. The starling program is a reminder that some of the most consequential uses of the technology are not in offices or data centres but in the paddock and the bush.

What’s next

The real test will come over the coming seasons, as the system is exposed to the messy reality of the field and managers measure whether it genuinely improves detection rates compared with traditional patrols. Success will be judged not by clever software but by a simple and demanding standard: whether Western Australia can keep its decades-long run going and remain a place where the European starling is a visitor to be intercepted rather than a resident to be endured. For now, the bush has a new set of ears, and they are always listening.
