Perth-born Canva confronts an AI reckoning over jobs

Few Australian technology stories carry the hometown pride of Canva. The design platform was dreamt up in Perth, built out by a pair of university sweethearts who could not crack the venture capital circuit for years, and has since grown into one of the most valuable privately held companies the country has produced. So when reports surface that Canva is cutting roles while leaning harder into artificial intelligence, the news lands with more weight than a routine restructure at an offshore multinational. It feels, to many in the local sector, like a bellwether.

The latest coverage, published by The West Australian, frames the company as facing an AI reckoning, with jobs slashed as the business recalibrates around a technology that is now central to its product and its internal workflow. The detail matters less than the pattern it fits. Across the global software industry, companies that spent the past decade hiring aggressively are now trimming headcount while pouring money and management attention into generative tools, and Canva is no longer an exception to that trend.

From a Perth living room to a global platform

Canva’s origin story has become part of Australian startup folklore. Co-founder Melanie Perkins began with a business teaching students to design yearbooks before she and Cliff Obrecht built the broader design platform that launched in 2013. The company eventually shifted its centre of gravity to Sydney, but its Western Australian roots remain a point of pride, and it stands alongside Atlassian as proof that a globally significant software company can be built from this part of the world.

That is precisely why the current moment is being watched so closely. Canva has positioned generative AI as the next chapter of its product, adding tools that draft, edit and generate images and layouts on a user’s behalf. The commercial logic is straightforward: if the software can do more of the creative heavy lifting, the platform becomes more useful to the hundreds of millions of people who use it. The harder question is what that means for the humans the company employs, particularly in roles where the same automation that delights customers can quietly erode the need for internal labour.

Two ways to read the cuts

There are competing interpretations of what is happening, and both deserve a hearing. The optimistic reading, favoured by many in the technology sector, is that this is a healthy reallocation rather than a retreat. On this view, companies like Canva are not shrinking so much as reshaping, shedding roles that AI can now absorb while redirecting resources towards engineers, researchers and product specialists who can push the technology further. Growth continues; the shape of the workforce simply changes. Supporters of this position point out that Canva remains a fast-growing business with enormous revenue and a vast user base, hardly a company in distress.

The more cautious reading comes from labour economists and unions, who argue that framing job losses as a natural evolution risks papering over real harm. When a marquee employer signals that AI can replace categories of work, the message ripples outward to every smaller firm wondering whether it should do the same. The worry is less about Canva’s balance sheet and more about the precedent. If the country’s flagship tech success can automate away roles that once looked secure, white-collar workers in marketing, design, administration and support have reason to ask where they stand. The debate is not whether AI changes work, which is settled, but whether the transition is being managed with enough care for the people caught in it.

What it means for Australia

For the broader Australian economy, Canva is a useful test case precisely because it is one of ours. The federal government has spent the past year talking up AI as an engine of productivity, pointing to research that suggests the technology could add tens of billions of dollars to national output. Yet the same reports that promise economic uplift also carry a quieter warning about displacement, and stories like this one are where that abstraction becomes concrete. It is one thing to read a projection about jobs at risk; it is another to see a beloved local company act on the calculation.

The stakes are sharpened by Australia’s reliance on a relatively small number of standout technology firms to anchor its startup ecosystem and to keep skilled workers at home. Canva, Atlassian and a handful of others serve as training grounds, talent magnets and proof points for investors. If those companies lean into leaner, more automated workforces, the pathways that once drew graduates into well-paid technology careers may narrow, at the very moment governments are urging young Australians to pick up digital skills. The country also lacks the kind of comprehensive policy framework that would cushion workers through rapid automation, with debate about retraining, redundancy protections and AI governance still largely unresolved.

There is a regional dimension too. Perth has worked hard to build an identity beyond mining and resources, and Canva has long been Exhibit A in the argument that Western Australia can nurture global technology talent. A narrative in which the state’s most famous software export is cutting staff, even for forward-looking reasons, complicates that pitch and puts pressure on local efforts to grow the next generation of founders.

What is next

The immediate question is how deep and how broad the changes run, and whether Canva frames them publicly as a one-off adjustment or the start of a structural shift in how it staffs the business. The company’s messaging will matter, because peers across the sector take their cues from leaders, and a confident embrace of AI-driven efficiency at Canva could accelerate similar moves elsewhere in the Australian market.

Beyond the company itself, expect the episode to feed into a louder national conversation about AI and employment heading into 2027. Policymakers, unions and industry groups are all circling the same set of unanswered questions about retraining, transparency and whether productivity gains will be shared or simply banked. Canva will not settle those arguments, but as a Perth-born business that Australians genuinely care about, it has a way of making them impossible to ignore.
