One Club and Google bring free AI creative challenge to Sydney

A travelling experiment in how advertising people and artificial intelligence might actually work together is about to touch down in Sydney. The One Club for Creativity, the New York based non-profit behind some of the industry’s best known awards, is bringing its global AI Creative Challenge to the harbour city on Thursday 19 November, with Google as its partner. The pitch that has caught the attention of the local creative community is a simple one: the session is free to attend.

According to Campaign Brief, which flagged that there are roughly two weeks to go before the Sydney date, the challenge is part of a worldwide push to get creatives hands-on with generative tools rather than reading about them from the sidelines. The format is built around live problem solving, where teams are handed a brief and asked to crack it with the help of AI inside a tight window. The idea is less about crowning a winner and more about demystifying a set of tools that many in the industry still regard with a mixture of excitement and unease.

Why the timing matters

The challenge arrives at a moment when Australian agencies, brands and production houses are all trying to work out where generative AI fits in their day to day output. Over the past two years the conversation has shifted from novelty to necessity. Clients are asking why a campaign cannot be turned around faster and cheaper, and creative leaders are being pressed to show they have a plan for the technology rather than a policy of quiet resistance. An event that puts working creatives in a room and asks them to build something real with AI, under time pressure and in front of their peers, lands squarely in the middle of that debate.

The One Club has built its reputation on craft, the sort of meticulous, award winning work that takes weeks rather than minutes. That it is now the organisation carrying a generative AI banner around the globe says something about how far the mood has moved. For a body so closely associated with celebrating human ingenuity, embracing the tools that some fear will hollction out entry level creative roles is a deliberate statement that the two can coexist.

Two ways to read it

Supporters of events like this argue that the worst outcome for Australian creatives would be to pretend the technology is a passing fad. On this view, the people who learn to direct AI tools, to prompt them well, to edit and shape their output and to know when to throw the results away, will be the ones who thrive. A free, hands-on session lowers the barrier for juniors and freelancers who cannot always justify the cost of a conference ticket, and it spreads the skills beyond the handful of large agencies that can afford dedicated innovation teams. In that sense the challenge functions as a kind of democratising exercise, putting the same tools in front of a graduate copywriter and a creative director at the same time.

The more cautious reading is harder to dismiss. Plenty of creatives worry that initiatives badged as education are also, in practice, marketing for the platforms that stand to benefit when the industry leans harder on their products. Google has a commercial interest in seeing its generative tools woven into the creative workflow, and a sponsored challenge is a low cost way to build familiarity and goodwill. There is also the uncomfortable question of training data and copyright, which continues to dog the generative AI sector and which has particular resonance for artists and writers whose work may have been swept into the models without consent or payment. For some in the room, a free session is never entirely free if the longer term price is a reshaped labour market.

The Australian stakes

For Australia, the implications run deeper than a single afternoon in Sydney. The local advertising and media industry is a significant employer and a genuine export of talent, with Australian creatives regularly turning up at the top of international award shows well out of proportion to the size of the market. If generative AI resets the economics of production, that reputation is both an asset and a vulnerability. Agencies that adapt quickly could punch even further above their weight, delivering world class ideas with leaner teams. Those that fall behind risk being undercut by offshore shops and in-house client teams armed with the same tools.

There is a skills dimension too. Australia has spent the past year grappling with how to fold AI literacy into workplaces across sectors, from the public service to retail, and the creative industries are no exception. Events that build practical capability, rather than abstract awareness, are exactly the sort of thing policymakers and industry bodies keep saying the country needs. The fact that this one is being delivered by a respected global institution, at no cost to attendees, gives it a credibility that a vendor demo would struggle to match. It also raises a fair question about why so much of this capability building is being driven by overseas organisations and big tech sponsors rather than home-grown institutions.

Regulation sits in the background of all of it. Australia is still working through how it will govern AI, including questions of transparency, copyright and the use of the technology in commercial content. A creative sector that has already rolled up its sleeves and worked with the tools will be far better placed to shape those rules than one that waited to be told what to do.

What happens next

The immediate next step is the Sydney session itself on 19 November, and whether the local creative community turns out in numbers will be an early signal of how seriously the industry is taking the shift. Beyond that, the real test is what attendees do with what they learn. If the challenge produces nothing more than a fun afternoon and a few LinkedIn posts, it will have changed little. If it seeds a cohort of creatives who go back to their studios and start building AI into live client work in a thoughtful, craft-led way, it could mark a small but meaningful step in how the Australian industry approaches the technology. Either way, a free ticket to find out is a rare offer in a sector where most learning comes with a price tag attached.
