Forrest blasts AI energy gluttony and climate deniers in Perth

Andrew Forrest has never been shy about picking a fight, and the artificial intelligence boom has just given him a fresh one. In an address in Perth, the Fortescue chairman took aim at what he called the energy gluttony of AI, arguing that the industry’s rush to build vast computing capacity is loading pressure onto power grids at exactly the moment the world should be racing to cut emissions. In the same breath, according to the reported account of his remarks, he turned his fire on climate deniers, framing the two as connected problems: a technology that is hungry for electricity, and a political culture that keeps resisting the clean generation needed to feed it responsibly.

Musk’s ‘Terafab’ chip mega-plan lands in Texas as AI demand runs hot

Why data centre water cooling is Australia’s next AI flashpoint

The context

The backdrop to Andrew Forrest‘s intervention is a numbers problem that the technology industry has struggled to talk about honestly. Training and running large AI models consumes enormous quantities of electricity, and the data centres that house that compute are being planned and built at a pace that few grids were designed to handle. The International Energy Agency has repeatedly flagged that data centre electricity demand is set to climb sharply over the rest of the decade, with AI the single biggest driver of that growth. For a country like Australia, where the energy transition is already a fraught and expensive political project, a new source of round-the-clock industrial demand is not a small thing.

Forrest sits at an unusual intersection of this debate. Through Fortescue he runs one of the world’s largest iron ore producers, a business whose fortunes depend on cheap, reliable power and on the health of the Chinese steel trade. Through Fortescue’s energy arm he has also staked billions on green hydrogen and renewable generation, betting that heavy industry can be run on clean electrons. That gives his warnings a particular edge. He is not an outsider lecturing the tech sector, he is an industrialist who has spent years arguing that the alternative to decarbonising is not cheaper, it is simply deferred and more painful.

The news

What made the Perth address notable was the way Forrest tied AI’s power appetite directly to the climate fight. Rather than treating the surge in data centre demand as a neutral engineering challenge, he cast it as a test of whether the world is serious about emissions at all. If AI is going to draw down ever larger volumes of electricity, his argument runs, then the only defensible answer is to make sure that electricity comes from clean sources rather than from new gas or coal generation brought online to keep the servers humming. In that framing, the AI build-out is not separate from the climate question, it is the newest front in it.

His attack on climate deniers slotted into the same logic. Forrest has long characterised organised climate scepticism as a brake on investment, and in Perth he returned to that theme, suggesting that those who downplay warming are effectively arguing for AI to be powered by fossil fuels by default. It is a deliberately provocative construction, and it is characteristic of a man who has used his wealth and his platform to push the debate well beyond the polite boundaries most corporate leaders observe.

Two ways to read it

Supporters of Forrest’s position will say he is simply stating the obvious. The energy cost of AI is real, it is growing, and pretending otherwise does no one any favours. On this view, tying the technology to the clean energy build-out is exactly the kind of leadership the moment needs, and Forrest’s willingness to say it plainly is a feature rather than a flaw.

The sceptics have a different reading. Critics of Forrest, and there are many in Australian business and political circles, argue that a mining magnate with large green energy investments has an obvious commercial interest in framing the debate this way. They also point out that the picture is more complicated than the gluttony label suggests. Several of the biggest AI operators, including the global cloud giants, have been among the largest corporate buyers of renewable energy on the planet, and some are pouring money into nuclear and long-duration storage precisely because they know the power question is existential for their business. From that angle, the industry is not ignoring the problem so much as trying to solve it on terms that Forrest may not like. There is also a hard-nosed grid engineering counterpoint: without firm, dispatchable generation, whatever its source, the lights do not stay on for anyone, servers included.

What it means for Australia

For Australia, this is not an abstract overseas argument. The country is in the middle of a data centre building spree, with major projects planned across the eastern seaboard and increasingly in regions with land and power to spare. The proposed developments in the Northern Territory tied to Beetaloo gas, the interest in regional New South Wales, and the steady flow of capital into listed infrastructure names all point to the same reality: a lot of new demand is coming, and the grid has to find a way to serve it. Every megawatt that a hyperscale facility draws is a megawatt that has to be generated, transmitted and paid for, and in a system already straining under the retirement of coal, that is a genuine planning headache.

Forrest’s home state makes the point sharply. Western Australia runs its own isolated grid, it has abundant sun and wind, and it has a resources economy that could plausibly host both the compute and the clean generation to power it. If the state gets the mix right, AI infrastructure could become a customer for the renewable capacity Forrest has championed. If it gets it wrong, new demand could just as easily lock in more gas, which is the outcome he is warning against. The same tension runs through the national debate about whether Australia’s cheap-power ambitions and its emissions targets can survive contact with an industry that never switches off.

What’s next

The immediate question is whether Forrest’s framing gains traction beyond the room in Perth. He has a habit of pushing arguments that sound fringe until they become mainstream, and the energy cost of AI is already climbing the agenda for regulators, network operators and investors alike. Expect the debate to sharpen as more data centre proposals hit planning queues and as governments are forced to spell out where the electricity to run them will come from. For an industrialist who has bet his second act on clean energy, the AI boom is either the best possible customer or the biggest possible threat to the transition, and Forrest has made clear which outcome he intends to fight for.
