BlinkLab’s ADHD study lifts hopes for smartphone diagnosis

An Australian company that turns a smartphone camera into a neurological testing kit says it now has data to push its platform well beyond its original target of autism. BlinkLab, which trades on the Australian Securities Exchange under the ticker BB1, has reported results from a study of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder that it argues justifies expanding its digital diagnostic tool into one of the most commonly diagnosed, and most contested, conditions in child health.

The premise behind BlinkLab is deceptively simple. Instead of relying on hours of clinical observation and questionnaires, the company uses a smartphone app to run short neurobehavioural tests, capturing tiny involuntary responses such as eyeblink reflexes and startle reactions. Machine-learning models then look for patterns in that data. The approach grew out of decades of neuroscience research into how the brain processes and filters sensory information, and BlinkLab has been building a case that those signals can help flag neurodevelopmental differences far earlier and far more cheaply than the current system allows.

What the study found

According to the ADHD study results reported by Kalkine, the company found that its digital tests could distinguish patterns associated with ADHD, a signal it says supports rolling the platform out across a broader set of conditions rather than confining it to autism screening. For a small-cap medical technology firm, that is a meaningful strategic pivot. Autism was always the beachhead. ADHD, given how many families seek an assessment each year, is a far larger commercial and clinical prize.

BlinkLab has framed the results as evidence that a single, standardised digital test could eventually sit at the front of the diagnostic journey for several overlapping neurodevelopmental conditions. That matters clinically, because ADHD and autism frequently co-occur and can be difficult to tease apart, particularly in young children. A tool that produces consistent, objective data points, rather than assessments that vary from clinic to clinic, is exactly the kind of thing paediatricians and psychologists have been asking for.

Two ways to read the news

The optimistic case is straightforward. If the technology holds up under larger, regulated trials, BlinkLab could offer a fast, low-cost first-line screen that helps triage the flood of referrals clogging the system. Supporters point to the elegance of the science and the sheer scale of unmet demand. The company has been pursuing a registration pathway in the United States, and positive ADHD data strengthens the argument that its underlying method generalises rather than being a one-condition novelty.

The sceptical case is equally important to spell out, because early-stage diagnostic technology has a long history of promising more than it delivers. A study that shows a signal is not the same as regulatory clearance, and it is a long way from there to routine use in a GP’s rooms. Investors in micro-cap health stocks know that clinical validation, reimbursement and clinician trust each take years, and any one of them can stall a product indefinitely. There is also a genuine clinical debate about ADHD diagnosis itself, with critics warning about both over-diagnosis and under-diagnosis depending on the population. A digital tool that speeds up the process will inevitably be drawn into that argument, and it will need to prove it reduces error rather than simply industrialising it.

There is a further caution worth stating plainly. AI diagnostic tools are only as good as the data they are trained on, and models built largely on one demographic can perform poorly on others. For a company hoping to sell into diverse health systems, demonstrating that the platform works across different ages, genders and cultural backgrounds will be as important as the headline accuracy figures.

Why this matters for Australia

The Australian stakes here are unusually high, because the country’s ADHD diagnostic system is under visible strain. Families routinely wait many months, sometimes more than a year, to see a paediatrician or psychiatrist, and private assessments can run into thousands of dollars. A 2023 Senate inquiry into ADHD documented the barriers to timely diagnosis and support, and recommended reforms to make assessment and treatment more accessible and affordable. Any technology that could shorten those queues or bring down costs speaks directly to a problem governments and clinicians have already acknowledged.

There is also a sovereign capability angle. BlinkLab is an Australian-founded, ASX-listed company working at the intersection of neuroscience and artificial intelligence, the sort of home-grown health technology that policymakers keep saying they want more of. If a locally developed platform can win regulatory approval abroad and then return to serve Australian patients, it becomes a case study in exactly the kind of high-value medical export the country has struggled to scale. The flip side is that success overseas often pulls companies, and their jobs, offshore, so the domestic benefit is not guaranteed simply because the science originated here.

For clinicians, the appeal is less about replacing human judgement and more about extending it. A reliable digital screen could let GPs and community health workers identify children who most need a full specialist assessment, reserving scarce expert time for the hardest cases. That triage role, rather than any promise of a fully automated diagnosis, is where tools like BlinkLab’s are most likely to earn their place if the evidence continues to build.

What happens next

The immediate question is whether these ADHD results feed into a formal regulatory submission and how quickly the company can move from a supportive study to the kind of large, controlled trial that regulators and clinicians require. Watch for detail on sample sizes, on how the tests perform against gold-standard clinical assessment, and on the company’s cash position, since ongoing trials are expensive and small med-techs live or die by their ability to keep funding the next milestone.

Investors will also be watching the market’s reaction, but the more durable measure of this announcement is clinical. If BlinkLab can convert promising data into validated, approved products across both autism and ADHD, it will have built something genuinely useful for a stretched health system. If it cannot, it will join a long list of diagnostic hopefuls whose science outran their evidence. For now, the ADHD results move the company from a single-condition story to a broader platform pitch, and that is a meaningful step, provided the follow-through matches the ambition.
