Macquarie cyber boss calls for ban on Meta’s AI glasses

Smart glasses were once the punchline of the wearables industry, a novelty that flopped when Google first tried to sell the idea more than a decade ago. That memory is fading fast. Meta has spent the past two years quietly turning its Ray-Ban partnership into one of the few genuine hits in consumer artificial intelligence, and now it is reaching for the oldest trick in the marketing book: celebrity glamour. The company has been leaning on famous faces, including reality television and beauty mogul Kylie Jenner, to push camera-equipped AI glasses from tech curiosity to fashion staple.

The strategy is working commercially. It is also ringing alarm bells among the people who study how these devices actually behave once they are strapped to millions of faces. According to Macquarie University’s Lighthouse publication, a senior cyber security figure at the university argues the risks are serious enough that Australia should consider banning the glasses altogether rather than waiting to regulate them after they become ubiquitous.

Why a camera on your face is different

The core objection is not that the glasses take photos. Phones already do that, and society has more or less made its peace with pocket cameras. The problem is the always-available, barely visible nature of a lens sitting on someone’s face. A person holding up a phone to record you is performing a recognisable social act, one you can see and respond to. A pair of ordinary-looking spectacles that can capture video, run live AI analysis and, in future iterations, potentially identify the people around you, collapses that social signal entirely. You cannot tell whether you are being recorded, and you have no practical way to opt out of standing in someone’s field of view.

Layer machine learning on top and the concern deepens. Meta’s glasses are designed to feed what the wearer sees into AI models that can describe scenes, translate signs, remember faces the wearer chooses to log, and answer questions about the environment in real time. The Macquarie argument is that this turns a fashion accessory into a mobile surveillance node, one that hoovers up the images and conversations of bystanders who never agreed to anything. Once that data leaves the device, questions about where it is stored, how long it is kept and who can access it become very hard to answer.

Two ways of reading the same product

Meta and its supporters see a different picture. To the company, these glasses are the most natural interface yet built for AI assistants, freeing users from staring at a phone and letting them keep their hands and attention on the world. The accessibility case is real: for people with low vision, a device that can read menus, describe surroundings and navigate unfamiliar streets is genuinely useful. Meta has also built in a recording indicator light and points to its terms of service as evidence that it takes bystander privacy seriously.

Critics counter that a small LED and a clause buried in a privacy policy are no match for a mass-market product sold on celebrity appeal. The whole point of the Kylie Jenner marketing push is to make the glasses feel aspirational and everyday, which is precisely what worries the cyber security community. A device that is genuinely fashionable is a device that stops looking like surveillance kit and starts looking like sunglasses, and that normalisation is the hard part to reverse. The call for an outright ban reflects a judgment that voluntary safeguards will not hold once tens of millions of these are in circulation.

What it means for Australia

Australia is an unusually exposed market for this debate, and not by accident. The country has spent the past two years positioning itself as a global test case for regulating consumer technology, from the world-leading social media age restrictions for under-16s to ongoing scrutiny of facial recognition. A push to ban or heavily restrict camera-equipped AI glasses fits squarely inside that appetite for moving first rather than following the United States and Europe.

The legal groundwork is patchy, though. Australia’s surveillance device laws are a state-by-state tangle written well before anyone imagined AI running live on a pair of Ray-Bans, and they vary considerably in how they treat recording in public versus private settings. The Privacy Act reforms currently working their way through Canberra were not designed with wearable AI cameras front of mind either. That leaves a gap between what the technology can now do and what the law clearly permits or forbids, which is exactly the space a call for a pre-emptive ban is trying to close.

There is also a domestic industry angle. Australian universities and the CSIRO have built real strength in privacy-preserving machine learning, and Macquarie’s Cyber Security Hub is among the groups arguing that the country should shape the rules rather than import them. A visible stance on Meta’s glasses is partly a bid for that seat at the table, at a moment when the federal government is drafting its broader approach to artificial intelligence and weighing how prescriptive to be.

What happens next

An outright ban is a long shot in the near term. Australia has no obvious existing power to prohibit a mainstream consumer electronics product on privacy grounds alone, and doing so would invite a fierce fight with a company that has shown it will lobby hard to protect its products. The more realistic path runs through the surveillance and privacy law reforms already underway, where the glasses become a concrete example that forces legislators to decide how public-space recording by AI wearables should be treated.

In the meantime the commercial momentum only builds. Meta has signalled that AI glasses are central to its long-term bet on moving beyond the smartphone, and the celebrity marketing is a sign it intends to sell them at scale, not as a niche gadget. That sets up a familiar Australian pattern: a fast-moving global product arriving well ahead of the rules meant to govern it, and regulators, researchers and the public left to work out the boundaries after the fact. The Macquarie intervention is an attempt to have that argument now, before the glasses become as unremarkable as the phone in everyone’s pocket.
