Perth startup Indrus lands $750k to tame yard chaos with AI cameras

The loading yard is one of the least glamorous corners of the supply chain, and one of the most expensive when things go wrong. Trailers sit idle in the wrong bays, drivers circle looking for a spot, and operators lose track of what is parked where. A Perth startup reckons the fix is sitting in plain sight, mounted on the fences and poles that already surround most sites: the humble camera, given a brain.

Indrus, a Western Australian logistics analysis company, has raised $750,000 in a pre-seed round to build out software that turns ordinary yard cameras into a live tracking system for trucks and trailers. As first reported by Startup Daily, the company is pitching its technology as a way to expose the day-to-day disorder of distribution yards, where assets worth hundreds of thousands of dollars are routinely misplaced for hours at a time.

What the money buys

The idea is deceptively simple. Rather than asking transport operators to bolt on expensive sensors, RFID tags or GPS units to every trailer and container, Indrus uses computer vision to read the footage that cameras are already capturing. The software identifies vehicles, follows their movements across a site, and builds a picture of where everything is and how long it has been sitting there. For a yard manager, that means knowing at a glance which bays are free, which trailers are ready to move, and where the bottlenecks are forming.

Yard management has long been the blind spot between two well-instrumented worlds. Goods inside a warehouse are tracked down to the shelf, and trucks out on the open road are followed by telematics and satellite positioning. The patch of bitumen in between, where trailers are dropped, swapped and staged, is often managed with a whiteboard, a two-way radio and a good memory. Indrus is betting that closing that gap with data will pay for itself quickly, because every hour a trailer spends lost or idle is an hour of capital doing nothing.

The $750,000 pre-seed is modest by the standards of the headline-grabbing raises that dominate the funding conversation, but it is the kind of early cheque that gets a focused, technical team to its first paying customers. Pre-seed capital typically goes towards finishing a product, hiring a handful of engineers, and running paid pilots that prove the technology holds up outside a demo. For a company selling into logistics, those real-world trials matter more than almost anything, because a yard in the rain at two in the morning is a very different test from a controlled pilot.

Two ways to read it

The optimistic case is straightforward. Australian freight volumes keep climbing, labour is scarce and costly, and operators are under pressure to squeeze more throughput from the sites they already have rather than build new ones. A camera-based system that improves visibility without a heavy hardware rollout is an easy story to sell to a chief operating officer watching margins. If Indrus can show even a small reduction in trailer dwell times or a cut in the hours staff spend hunting for assets, the return on a software subscription is easy to calculate.

The sceptical case is worth airing too. Computer vision in industrial settings is notoriously fiddly. Cameras get dirty, lighting changes, dust and weather interfere, and the gap between a model that works on clean footage and one that performs reliably across hundreds of sites is where many promising vision startups have stumbled. Indrus will also be entering a crowded global category. Yard management systems are an established software segment, and larger logistics technology vendors are racing to add AI features of their own. The company’s advantage will need to be the quality of its tracking and how little friction it takes to deploy, not the novelty of the concept.

There is also the perennial question of whether early customers will pay for visibility alone, or whether they will expect the software to act on what it sees, automatically directing trucks to bays, flagging compliance breaches, or feeding scheduling systems. The companies that win in this space tend to be the ones that move quickly from reporting problems to helping solve them.

Why it matters for Australia

Australia is a hard country to move freight around, and that is precisely why a tool like this could find a receptive market here. The distances are vast, the population is thin, and supply chains stretch across a continent where a disruption in one port or depot ripples outward for weeks. The pandemic years exposed how brittle those links can be, and operators have since been investing in anything that gives them a clearer view of their own operations.

Perth is a fitting base for the company. Western Australia sits at the heart of the nation’s resources and export economy, and its ports, rail terminals and distribution centres handle enormous volumes of bulk and containerised freight. That gives a local startup a ready supply of demanding customers on its doorstep, and a proving ground that is as tough as any in the world. Building logistics technology in Perth rather than on the east coast also helps counter the familiar complaint that Australian innovation clusters too tightly in Sydney and Melbourne.

The raise lands amid a broader wave of applied artificial intelligence across Australian industry, where the interest has shifted from flashy consumer chatbots towards unglamorous but valuable tools that take cost and friction out of established businesses. From councils using AI to spot potholes to retailers deploying it for customer retention, the pattern is the same: narrow, practical systems aimed at problems with a clear dollar value attached. Yard tracking fits neatly into that trend.

What’s next

The immediate priority for Indrus will be converting pilots into paying contracts and proving its tracking works consistently across different sites and conditions. Success at pre-seed is measured in reference customers and retention, the evidence a company needs to raise a larger seed round on stronger terms. If the technology performs, there is a natural path to expand beyond trucks and trailers into fuller yard orchestration, and to sell into the ports, mining logistics operations and third-party warehouses that define the Western Australian freight landscape.

For now, the company has enough runway to answer the question that matters most: can a camera on a pole really do the job that a fleet of expensive sensors has struggled to? If the answer is yes, the quiet corner of the supply chain may turn out to be one of the more interesting places to watch.
