China’s electric vehicle makers have spent the past two years turning the Australian market into one of their busiest export battlegrounds, and Xpeng is now moving to widen its foothold well beyond the single sedan and SUV it launched with. The company has confirmed a run of new models for local buyers, and in doing so it has framed the cars as only the visible edge of a far larger ambition built around artificial intelligence.
The pitch, delivered as Xpeng outlined its product pipeline, reaches past conventional motoring into territory that still sounds like science fiction to most Australian drivers: self-driving robotaxis, personal flying vehicles and humanoid robots. According to The Driven, the carmaker sees its vehicles as data-gathering platforms that feed the same underlying AI systems powering those longer-term projects, with Australia positioned as one of the markets where the strategy will play out.
From two models to a full range
