Three AI chatbots hand in their Melbourne Cup tips

On the eve of the race that stops a nation, the search for a winning tip has taken a very 2026 turn. Punters have always leaned on form guides, track whispers and the odd superstition, but this year a new source of racing wisdom has joined the mix: the chatbot. In the hours before Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup, Adelaide Now put the field to three leading AI assistants and asked each one to name its pick for the 2026 Melbourne Cup.

It is a light-hearted exercise, and the outlet treats it as such. But it also lands at a moment when millions of Australians are starting to treat these tools as everyday companions, consulting them on everything from recipes and resumes to legal letters and, now, the Flemington straight. The actual tips, horse by horse, are set out in the original piece, and that is where you should go if you want the names before the barriers open. What is worth unpacking here is the bigger question the stunt raises: what is a large language model actually doing when you ask it to pick a winner, and should anyone put money on the answer?

What the chatbots are really doing

The instinct, understandably, is to imagine the machine crunching decades of form, sectional times, track bias, barrier draws and jockey records, then spitting out a mathematically optimal selection. That is not what a general-purpose chatbot does. A model such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude is a language predictor. It generates the most plausible-sounding response based on patterns in the text it was trained on, which means its Cup tip is shaped by how often a horse, trainer or stable has been written about, not by any live probabilistic edge over the TAB’s market.

That distinction matters because the output can look authoritative while resting on very little. A chatbot can produce a confident paragraph explaining why a particular stayer suits the 3200 metres, complete with plausible-sounding reasoning, even when its underlying knowledge is months out of date or simply wrong. Unless a tool is explicitly connected to live odds and current form, it may not even know the final field, let alone the scratchings announced on the morning of the race. Several of the mainstream assistants will, sensibly, hedge: they decline to guarantee anything, remind the user that racing is unpredictable and nudge them towards gambling responsibly. Those guardrails are the most useful thing in the whole exercise.

Harmless fun, or a nudge in the wrong direction?

There are two ways to read a newsroom asking robots to tip the Cup. The generous view is that it is exactly the kind of seasonal fun the Cup invites. The race has always been democratic in its silliness: the office sweep, the hat, the once-a-year flutter chosen because a horse shares a name with the family dog. A chatbot pick is just the latest novelty in that tradition, no more scientific than closing your eyes and stabbing a finger at the form guide, and arguably more entertaining.

The more cautious view is that dressing a guess in the language of artificial intelligence lends it a false authority. When a tool that helps you draft work emails also hands you a Cup tip in the same calm, fluent voice, the line between informed analysis and confident guesswork blurs. For a casual punter, that can make a coin-flip feel like a data-driven call. Responsible gambling advocates have spent years warning that anything which makes betting feel smarter or more systematic can quietly encourage people to wager more than they intended, and an AanI-branded tip sits uncomfortably close to that territory.

Why this matters in Australia

Nowhere is the test more pointed than here. Australians are among the heaviest gamblers in the world per head of population, and the Melbourne Cup is the single biggest betting day on the calendar, drawing in people who never otherwise place a wager. Layer onto that a population that is adopting generative AI at pace, in workplaces, schools and on phones, and you have the conditions for these tools to become a genuine input into real-money decisions rather than a bit of carnival colour.

It also arrives while the country is still working out how to govern AI at all. Canberra has been consulting on guardrails for high-risk uses, and consumer advocates have flagged the risk of AI systems giving confident advice in areas, from finance to health to gambling, where being wrong carries a real cost. A Cup tip is trivial on its own. The pattern it illustrates, of people trusting a fluent machine answer in a domain where the machine has no special insight, is not. The same overconfidence that produces a dud racing tip can produce a dud tax answer or a dud medical suggestion.

There is a commercial undercurrent too. Australia’s wagering giants have been investing heavily in data, personalisation and AI-driven product, and the regulatory conversation around how betting is marketed, especially to younger and more digitally native audiences, is far from settled. A chatbot that cheerfully tips a winner, even in jest, is a reminder of how naturally these technologies could be folded into a gambling experience that is already highly engineered to keep people playing.

What’s next

The most likely outcome of this particular experiment is the one the bookies would predict: the chatbots will mostly be wrong, because almost everyone is mostly wrong about the Melbourne Cup. Staying races over two miles are notorious levellers, and no amount of pattern-matching changes the fact that 24 horses go around and only one can win. By Tuesday evening the picks will be a footnote, and the memes about which AI backed the winner will write themselves.

The more durable story is about expectations. As these tools get plugged into live data and marketed as agents that can act on our behalf, the temptation to treat them as oracles will only grow. The healthy response is the same one the better chatbots already offer when pushed: enjoy the novelty, keep your flutter small, and remember that a confident answer is not the same as a correct one. If the 2026 Cup teaches Australians to hold AI to that standard, it will have earned its place in the race that stops a nation for reasons that have nothing to do with the result.
