Claude Code is one of the fastest-growing AI tools in Australia, searches for it have climbed sharply through 2026. If you have heard developers rave about it, here is what it is and why it matters, in plain English.
What is Claude Code?
Claude Code is Anthropic’s agentic coding tool. Instead of a chat window where you copy and paste snippets, it runs in your terminal and works directly on your project: reading files, writing and editing code across many files, running commands and tests, fixing bugs and building whole features from a plain-English description. Think of it less as autocomplete and more as an AI pair programmer that can actually do the work, with your approval at each step.
Why are developers adopting it so fast?
Because it collapses the distance between describing what you want and having working software. A developer can say build a login page or find and fix the bug causing this error, and Claude Code will plan the change, edit the relevant files and run the tests. It reasons across large, messy codebases in a way that autocomplete tools cannot.
Claude Code vs GitHub Copilot
They are complementary. Copilot autocompletes as you type inside your editor. Claude Code acts more autonomously across the whole project, planning and making multi-file changes from a single instruction. Plenty of developers run both.
Do you need to be a developer?
It helps, but the barrier is lower than people expect. Technical non-developers use Claude Code to automate repetitive work and build small internal tools. The catch is that it is powerful enough to do damage if used carelessly, which is why teams get the most value from structured training that teaches safe, effective workflows.
What does it cost?
Claude Code is included with Claude’s paid subscriptions (Pro and Max) up to usage limits, and is also available via the pay-as-you-go API for heavier or automated use.
Getting your team productive with Claude Code
This is where most Australian teams need help, not with access, but with turning Claude Code into a reliable part of how they build. Our partners at Spruik and FutureDeployed run hands-on Claude and Claude Code training for Australian teams, run by Australia’s Claude community leaders. If you want your developers genuinely fluent, start a conversation.

Frequently asked questions
What is Claude Code?
Claude Code is Anthropic’s agentic coding tool. It runs in your terminal and can read, write and edit code across a whole project, run commands, fix bugs and build features from a plain-English description, acting as an AI pair programmer rather than just a chat window.
Is Claude Code free?
Claude Code is included with Claude paid subscriptions (Pro and Max) up to usage limits, and is also available via the pay-as-you-go API. Heavy automated use can also run on an API key billed by usage.
Do you need to be a developer to use Claude Code?
It helps, but the barrier is lower than it looks. Non-developers use it to automate tasks and build small tools with guidance. For teams, the fastest path is structured training so people learn safe, effective workflows.
Is Claude Code better than GitHub Copilot?
They solve different problems. Copilot autocompletes code inside your editor; Claude Code acts more autonomously across a whole project, planning and making multi-file changes. Many developers use both.
What can Claude Code do?
Read and understand a codebase, write and edit multiple files, run tests and commands, fix bugs, refactor, and build features from a description, all from the terminal with your approval.
