Why craft still beats prompts in the age of AI art

For the past three years, the mood inside Australia’s creative studios has swung between fascination and dread. Generative image tools that once produced smeared, six-fingered curiosities can now render a convincing product shot, a fashion campaign or a magazine cover in the time it takes to brief a junior. For retouchers, illustrators and photographers who spent decades learning their craft, the obvious fear is that the craft no longer matters. A veteran Sydney imaging specialist has just made the case that the opposite is true.

Writing for the advertising trade publication Campaign Brief, high-end retoucher and creative imaging specialist Matt Supple argues that the artists quietly pulling ahead with AI are not the ones typing the cleverest prompts. They are the ones who already knew how to see. In his piece for Campaign Brief, Supple draws on more than 25 years spent moving between New York, Sydney and New Zealand to describe a widening gap that has nothing to do with software licences and everything to do with taste, judgement and the accumulated instincts of a working professional.

The quiet advantage

Supple’s central point is that a generative model is only as good as the person guiding it, and guiding it well turns out to require exactly the skills the technology was supposed to make redundant. Knowing where a light should fall, why a colour grade feels wrong, how a real lens compresses a face, when a composition is a fraction off balance: these are the things a seasoned image-maker carries in muscle memory. Feed that knowledge into a tool and the output improves at every stage, from the initial generation to the dozens of small corrections that separate a passable image from a publishable one.

The people playing a different game, in his telling, are not gaming the prompt box. They are applying a lifetime of visual literacy to a new instrument, then finishing the work by hand the way they always have. The prompt gets them a starting point. Everything that makes the final image sing still comes from the human who knows what “right” looks like. That reframing matters because so much of the public conversation treats prompting as the skill, when Supple positions it as merely the on-ramp.

It is a deliberately reassuring argument for an anxious industry, and it deserves to be read alongside the harder realities. The counter-case is not difficult to mount. Clients commissioning a mid-tier catalogue shoot or a run of social tiles may simply not care whether the image carries a master’s fingerprints, provided it looks good enough and costs a fraction of the old rate. Craft can be a genuine advantage at the top of the market while the floor collapses underneath everyone else. Plenty of skilled retouchers and commercial photographers are already watching briefs shrink, not because their eye has stopped being valuable, but because the buyer’s definition of “good enough” has moved.

Two ways to read the same shift

Both things can be true at once. Supple is describing where enduring value sits, and the accumulated judgement of a professional really is hard to replicate with a text box. But a hard-nosed studio owner in Surry Hills or Fitzroy is also right to worry that the market rewarding that judgement is narrowing to the premium end, where budgets and brand risk still justify paying for a human. The optimistic reading says craft becomes the differentiator that lets experienced operators charge more. The pessimistic reading says the same forces hollow out the middle, leaving fewer paths for the next generation to accumulate the very experience Supple prizes. Nobody accrues 25 years of instinct if the entry-level work that used to build it has been automated away.

That tension over how juniors learn their trade is where the debate gets genuinely uncomfortable, and it is one the industry has not resolved.

What it means for Australia

Australia has a specific stake in this. The local creative sector is small, tightly networked and heavily reliant on a relatively thin layer of highly experienced practitioners, many of whom, like Supple, built their reputations partly offshore before bringing that standard home. The country punches above its weight in advertising, photography and post-production, and that reputation rests on craft rather than scale. If Supple is right that deep skill is the moat, Australian studios are unusually well placed to defend a premium position against a flood of commodity imagery.

The catch is the pipeline. Australia’s advertising, publishing and design businesses have long trained talent through exactly the kind of routine, lower-stakes production work that generative tools are now devouring. If that rung disappears, the country risks a future where it still has a handful of revered veterans and very little coming up behind them. The same worry has surfaced across other parts of the local economy this year, from questions about whether AI is thinning out entry-level roles to broader national arguments about how the country trains people for an automated workforce. The creative industries are simply feeling it earlier and more visibly than most, because their tools got good so fast.

There is also a commercial opportunity in Supple’s framing that Australian operators can act on now. Studios that lean into their craft, that make the human judgement explicit rather than hiding it, and that position AI as an instrument in expert hands rather than a replacement for them, have a story to sell to clients who are themselves nervous about generic, off-the-shelf imagery flooding their categories. The differentiation is real, provided the industry markets it.

What’s next

The immediate question for Australian creatives is not whether to use these tools, that argument is effectively over, but how to price and position the expertise that surrounds them. Expect the premium end of the market to double down on craft as a selling point, while the volume end continues to automate. The harder, slower conversation is about training: how agencies, studios and educators rebuild an apprenticeship path when the old entry-level work has evaporated. Supple’s essay is ultimately an optimistic one, arguing that the human eye still decides the outcome. Whether Australia keeps producing people with that eye is the part nobody has solved yet.
