Nuix leans harder into agentic AI as Neo nears a third of revenue

Few Australian software companies have had a wilder ride on the ASX than Nuix, the Sydney-based maker of investigative analytics software used by police, regulators, law firms and corporate fraud teams to make sense of enormous, messy piles of data. After a bruising few years of boardroom drama, legal fights and a share price that once looked broken, the company is trying to rewrite its story around a single idea: artificial intelligence that does the digging for you.

SentinelOne’s Weingarten makes the case for an autonomous SOC

The latest signpost comes via financial research house Kalkine, which reported that Nuix (ASX:NXL) is expanding its agentic AI capabilities and that its Neo platform has climbed to roughly 30 per cent of the group’s contract value. For a company whose legacy engine was essentially a very powerful search-and-processing tool sold as perpetual licences, that figure matters. It is a marker of how quickly the business is shifting onto a modern, cloud-delivered, subscription footing, and of how much of its commercial future now rides on AI features rather than raw processing grunt.

From data processing to digital agents

To understand why the 30 per cent number is being talked about, it helps to understand what Nuix actually does. Its software ingests email archives, chat logs, financial records, seized devices and other unstructured data, then indexes and analyses it so investigators can find the needle in the haystack. That capability has long underpinned its work in e-discovery, regulatory investigations and digital forensics around the world.

Neo is the company’s newer, cloud-native platform, and it is the vehicle through which Nuix is layering in generative and agentic AI. The distinction between the two flavours of AI is important. Generative AI summarises documents, drafts text and answers questions. Agentic AI goes further, carrying out multi-step tasks with a degree of autonomy, chaining together actions such as retrieving data, analysing it, flagging anomalies and preparing a draft output for a human to review. In an investigations context, the pitch is that an agent could triage a mountain of evidence overnight and hand an analyst a prioritised shortlist in the morning, rather than that analyst spending days building queries by hand.

That is the promise. As Nuix chief executive Jonathan Rubinsztein has consistently framed it over the past two years, the company’s bet is that customers will pay for outcomes and insight, not just for a tool that processes terabytes. Moving contract value onto Neo, and bundling AI into those contracts, is the commercial expression of that strategy.

Why the Neo share of revenue is the number to watch

Investors have fixated on the Neo mix for a reason. A higher proportion of contract value sitting on the subscription platform tends to mean more predictable, recurring revenue, the kind that software investors reward with richer multiples. It also suggests existing customers are migrating across rather than clinging to older licences, and that new AI functionality is landing commercially rather than sitting unused.

There is a cautionary reading, too. Thirty per cent is a milestone, but it also means around 70 per cent of the book still sits on the legacy side, and the harder yards of migration are often the ones that remain. Enterprise and government buyers in investigations and compliance move slowly, with long procurement cycles and strict requirements around data residency, security and auditability. Agentic AI, which acts with autonomy, raises the bar further, because a regulator or court will want to understand how an automated agent reached a conclusion. Nuix’s challenge is to make the AI genuinely useful while keeping a human firmly in the loop and the decision trail defensible.

Two ways to read the strategy

The bullish case is straightforward. Nuix sells into exactly the kind of work that is drowning in data and starved of skilled analysts: fraud investigations, anti-money-laundering reviews, litigation discovery and cyber incident response. If agentic AI can compress weeks of manual review into hours, the value proposition writes itself, and the company has a defensible niche with deep technical moats and sticky government and legal customers.

The sceptical case is equally clear. Nuix is not alone in spotting this opportunity. Global e-discovery and legal-tech players, the big cloud providers and a swarm of well-funded AI startups are all racing to automate document review and investigations. Nuix must keep investing heavily to stay ahead, while rebuilding trust with a market that has not forgotten the governance problems that dogged the company after its 2020 float. The strategy is sound; the execution risk is real.

What it means for Australia

For the local technology scene, Nuix is a genuinely interesting test case. It is one of the few homegrown Australian software firms selling sophisticated, world-class product into high-stakes government and enterprise markets offshore, competing against much larger American rivals. Its reinvention around AI is therefore a useful barometer for whether Australian deep-tech companies can pivot fast enough to stay relevant in an AI-first world, rather than being overtaken by better-capitalised global players.

There is a sovereign-capability angle as well. The tools Nuix builds are used by Australian regulators, enforcement agencies and corporate compliance teams, and keeping that kind of investigative software and the expertise behind it onshore has obvious value as agentic AI starts handling sensitive evidence and personal data. The flip side is that the same autonomy that makes these agents powerful will draw scrutiny from Australian privacy and legal watchdogs, especially as the Commonwealth continues to shape its approach to high-risk AI. Nuix’s experience will be a live example of how AI governance plays out where it actually bites, inside investigations that can end up in court.

What’s next

The near-term scorecard will be whether the Neo share of contract value keeps climbing past 30 per cent, whether AI features are translating into larger deals and genuine upsell, and whether the company can convert customer interest in agentic tools into signed contracts. Investors will be watching upcoming trading updates and the next set of results for evidence that the strategy is compounding rather than stalling. For now, Nuix has staked its recovery on the idea that the future of investigations is autonomous software doing the heavy lifting, with Australians building it.
