AI Video Summit launches Unlearn podcast before Sydney event

The Australian advertising and media industries have spent the past two years lurching between fascination and dread as generative video tools moved from novelty to something closer to a production line. Now the organisers of a Sydney conference devoted to the subject are trying to shift the conversation from anxiety to craft, launching a podcast series designed to prepare the sector for what is coming.

Why Prada’s festive push bets on the human touch over AI

Just 9% of Australians would hand AI firms their creative work

Ahead of the AI Video for Media & Advertising Summit, scheduled for Sydney in October, the event’s organisers have introduced a podcast called Unlearn. According to Campaign Brief, the series is pitched as a lead-in to the summit, giving practitioners a way to grapple with the creative and commercial questions raised by AI-generated video before they gather in person.

Why the name matters

The title is a deliberate provocation. The premise behind Unlearn is that the biggest obstacle facing creative teams is not the technology itself but the habits and assumptions built up over decades of traditional production. Storyboarding, shot lists, agency retainers, the slow choreography of a shoot day: much of that established practice was designed for a world in which moving images were expensive and time-consuming to make. Generative tools collapse those constraints, and the argument the organisers appear to be making is that professionals need to actively discard old workflows rather than bolt new software onto them.

That framing sits alongside a genuine commercial reality. Text-to-video systems have improved rapidly, and the gap between a rough concept and a usable clip has narrowed to the point where small teams can produce material that once required a full crew. For agencies under pressure to do more with shrinking budgets, the appeal is obvious. The catch is that speed and volume do not automatically translate into work that connects with audiences, which is where the debate gets interesting.

Two ways of reading the shift

Optimists in the industry see AI video as a democratising force. A regional business that could never afford a television-quality spot can now commission something credible, and creative directors can test a dozen ideas in the time it used to take to shoot one. Podcasts and events like this summit lean into that story, positioning generative tools as an expansion of what is possible rather than a replacement for human judgement.

The more cautious view, widely held among producers, editors and post-production houses, is that the economics threaten a large slice of skilled work. If a brand can generate a campaign in-house, the money that once flowed to production companies, camera operators, colourists and voice artists starts to evaporate. There is also the quality problem that has dogged the sector, sometimes dismissed as “AI slop”, where cheaply generated content floods feeds without much thought behind it. FluentSea has previously reported on Australian marketers naming low-quality AI output as one of their biggest fears, and that unease has not gone away simply because the tools have improved.

Copyright and disclosure hang over all of it. Australian advertisers operate under the Australian Association of National Advertisers codes, and questions about how AI-generated imagery is created, whether it draws on protected material, and whether audiences should be told, remain largely unresolved. A podcast aimed at helping the industry “unlearn” its old habits will inevitably have to confront the fact that some of those habits, like clearing rights and crediting creators, exist for good reason.

The Australian stakes

For the local industry, the timing is significant. Australia’s advertising market is relatively small and heavily concentrated in Sydney and Melbourne, which means shifts in production economics land quickly and are felt across a tight network of agencies and freelancers. A tool that lets a Sydney agency service a national client without a shoot changes the maths for the whole supply chain, from casting agents to regional crews who rely on commercial work between larger productions.

There is also a talent dimension. Australian creative and technical staff have long competed on craft, exporting skills to production hubs overseas and drawing international campaigns onshore. If the value increasingly sits in prompting, editing and taste rather than in traditional shooting and post-production, the skills that command a premium will change, and so will the training that emerging professionals need. Events like the Sydney summit are partly an attempt to get ahead of that reskilling question before the market forces the issue.

Regulators and industry bodies are watching too. The federal government has signalled a more interventionist posture on AI generally, and the creative sector has been vocal about wanting protections for artists and clear rules on how generative systems are trained. Any framework that emerges will shape what Australian agencies can and cannot do with these tools, which makes an industry-led conversation now, before the rules harden, more than a marketing exercise.

What is next

The podcast is the warm-up act. The real test will be the October summit itself, where the promises made in audio form will meet the scepticism of a room full of people whose livelihoods depend on getting the answer right. Expect the agenda to move beyond the wow factor of new models and into the harder territory of pricing, client relationships, rights management and the future shape of creative teams.

Whether Unlearn succeeds as a title or simply as a marketing hook, its underlying bet is a reasonable one. The Australian media and advertising industries are not short of access to AI video tools. What they are still working out is how to use them without hollowing out the craft, the careers and the trust that the sector has spent decades building. That conversation is only getting started, and Sydney has put its hand up to host a large part of it.

Update, 31 July 2026: Unlearn podcast adds NeuralGarage's Natekar

The warm-up act has its next guest. The newest Unlearn episode features Mandar Natekar, co-founder and chief executive of NeuralGarage, an AI company whose proprietary models are pitched at cinematic-quality visual dubbing and multilingual adaptation, letting filmed content move across languages and audiences without a reshoot.

That focus sharpens the very question the summit is circling. NeuralGarage’s tools, marketed under the names VisualDub and DRAMA, sit squarely in the territory where Australian post-production, voice and localisation work has traditionally earned its keep, and the company already counts studios, streamers and broadcasters among its clients. For local producers weighing whether AI video expands their craft or erodes it, a speaker building the underlying technology is a pointed choice.

The conversation is hosted by Jonny Peters, programme director for the Sydney event, and follows the format of putting each summit speaker through their history in advertising, the innovations shaping their thinking, and where they believe the industry is heading. It keeps the series pointed at October, when those on-air arguments meet a room whose livelihoods depend on the answers.
