Free AI hotline launches to help confused small businesses

For the average Australian small business owner, artificial intelligence has become a source of noise rather than clarity. The pitches arrive daily, from software vendors promising to automate the back office to consultants warning that anyone who fails to adopt the technology will be left behind. What has been missing is somewhere neutral to turn, a place to ask a basic question and get a plain answer without a sales script attached. A new federally backed service unveiled in Melbourne is trying to fill that gap, and its central feature is disarmingly old-fashioned: a phone number.

Why Australia’s AI plan lives or dies on workforce capability

The service has been built by SMEC AI under the Commonwealth’s AI Adopt program, and it was launched alongside the National AI Centre. As Dynamic Business reported, the idea is to give small and medium enterprises a free, no-strings point of contact where they can talk through what AI might do for them, what it will not do, and where to start. In an era of chatbots and self-service portals, the decision to route confused owners to a human voice is a deliberate one.

Why a hotline, and why now

The logic behind the service reflects a well-documented problem. Large Australian companies have the budgets, the data teams and the vendor relationships to experiment with AI, and many are doing so at pace. Small businesses, which employ the bulk of the private-sector workforce, tend to sit on the sidelines. They lack dedicated technology staff, they are wary of cost, and they are understandably nervous about handing customer data to tools they do not fully understand. The result is a widening gap between the firms racing ahead and those frozen by uncertainty.

The AI Adopt program was designed to close that gap. It funds a network of centres and services intended to help SMEs understand and take up AI responsibly, and the new advisory line is a practical expression of that goal. Rather than publishing another glossy guide destined to be ignored, the program is betting that a conversation will do more to shift behaviour than a download. An owner who can describe their actual problem, whether it is drowning in invoices or struggling to answer customer emails after hours, is more likely to leave with a next step they will actually take.

The involvement of the National AI Centre matters here too. The centre, which sits within the government’s broader industry apparatus, has spent the past couple of years positioning itself as the trusted middle ground between hype and hesitation. Pairing its brand with a free helpline signals that this is meant to be seen as a credible public service rather than a marketing funnel.

Two ways to read the move

Supporters will argue the approach is exactly right. Adoption research consistently shows that trust, not technology, is the binding constraint for small firms. A neutral, government-backed voice on the end of a phone addresses that directly. It meets owners where they are, in the language they use, and it lowers the barrier to a first step that many have been putting off for months. For a tradie, a cafe owner or a suburban accountant, the difference between reading a whitepaper and ringing someone who will listen is not trivial.

Sceptics will ask harder questions. A phone line is only as good as the advice delivered down it, and quality is difficult to guarantee at scale. If demand is strong, will callers face long waits or be handed generic scripts that could have come from any brochure? There is also the perennial risk that a taxpayer-funded initiative becomes a quiet channel for steering businesses toward particular vendors or products, however unintentionally. And a single service, however well run, cannot on its own move the national dial on adoption. The measure of success will be whether callers change what they do, not simply whether the phone rings.

There is a further tension worth naming. Government has spent much of the past year warning small businesses to be cautious about AI, citing data privacy, inaccurate outputs and the danger of over-trusting automated tools. A service that actively encourages adoption has to hold both messages at once: use this technology, but use it carefully. Whether the advice on offer strikes that balance, or leans too far toward enthusiasm, will shape how much the sector trusts it.

What it means for Australia

The stakes are national even if the launch was local. Small and medium enterprises account for the vast majority of Australian businesses and a substantial share of employment, so their collective decision to embrace or ignore AI will do more to determine the country’s productivity trajectory than the choices of a handful of ASX heavyweights. Policymakers have made no secret of their ambition to lift Australia’s standing in the global AI race, and that ambition is hollow if adoption remains concentrated among firms that were always going to move first.

Melbourne is a fitting stage for the announcement. Victoria’s capital has a dense base of small businesses across retail, hospitality, professional services and light manufacturing, precisely the cohort the service is aimed at. If the model proves itself there, the obvious next step is national reach, extending the same support to owners in regional towns and outer suburbs who are often furthest from the advice big-city firms take for granted.

There is also a competitiveness angle. Australia’s trading partners and rivals are pouring resources into small-business digitisation, and a domestic productivity lag carries real economic cost. A cheap, human-centred intervention that nudges thousands of firms to adopt even modest automation could deliver a return out of proportion to its price tag, provided it actually changes behaviour rather than simply generating goodwill.

What happens next

The immediate test is uptake. Government will be watching call volumes, the mix of questions and, crucially, whether owners who ring go on to trial or deploy AI in their operations. Those figures will determine whether the service is expanded, folded into the wider AI Adopt network, or quietly wound back. Expect the program to publish adoption data over the coming months, and expect small-business groups to scrutinise whether the advice is genuinely independent.

For now, the offer is straightforward and, for a sector long promised transformation and handed jargon instead, refreshingly concrete. If an owner is confused about AI, there is finally a number to call, and someone on the other end whose job is to help rather than to sell. Whether that human touch can scale into a lasting shift in how Australian small businesses use technology is the question the next year will answer.
