Envision pitches AI energy system at heavy industry in Melbourne

Few industries are harder to run on clean power than the ones that dig up and refine Australia’s resources. Mines and smelters consume electricity around the clock in enormous volumes, and the economics of aluminium, steel and critical minerals hinge on keeping that supply cheap, constant and reliable. It is into that difficult space that Chinese cleantech group Envision Energy has stepped, using the All Energy Australia trade show in Melbourne to launch what it describes as an AI-powered energy system designed specifically for the mining and smelting sector.

The pitch, revealed at the event and reported by Yahoo Finance Singapore, folds renewable generation, battery storage and software into a single managed package. The intelligence layer is the selling point. Rather than treating wind, solar, storage and industrial load as separate problems, the system uses AI to forecast generation and demand, then schedule power so that energy-hungry processes can lean on renewables when they are plentiful and draw on stored or firmed supply when they are not.

Why the sector is such a hard target

Envision is not a minor player chasing a niche. The company is one of the world’s largest makers of wind turbines and a significant force in battery storage and green hydrogen, and it has built its brand around the idea of integrated “net-zero” technology stacks rather than single products. Targeting mining and smelting is a logical extension of that strategy, because these operations represent some of the largest single electricity loads on any grid.

The challenge is that smelting in particular does not tolerate interruption well. An aluminium smelter that loses power for only a few hours can suffer frozen pots and catastrophic damage, which is why operators have historically prized baseload coal and gas above the variable output of wind and solar. Any system promising to shift that balance has to prove it can deliver firmness measured in gigawatt-hours and in continuous uptime, not just in favourable averages. Envision’s answer is that software and storage, orchestrated intelligently, can bridge the gap that renewables alone cannot.

Supporters of this approach argue that the direction of travel is already set. Global buyers of metals, from carmakers to construction firms, are increasingly asking for low-carbon material, and a premium is emerging for “green” aluminium and steel. On that reading, an AI-managed clean energy system is less a cost and more a competitive hedge, allowing miners and smelters to decarbonise without surrendering the reliability their operations demand.

Sceptics are more cautious. Heavy industry has seen plenty of integrated energy promises before, and the gap between a trade-show launch and a bankable, at-scale deployment is wide. Questions around the capital cost of the storage needed to firm a smelter, the performance of forecasting algorithms during extended weather lulls, and the willingness of conservative operators to hand scheduling decisions to an AanAI system all remain open. There is also the broader debate, now live across Australian policy circles, about the role of Chinese technology in critical energy infrastructure, a sensitivity that will follow any overseas vendor pitching into the resources supply chain.

What it means for Australia

The timing and the venue matter here. Australia is one of the world’s largest exporters of iron ore, lithium, bauxite and other minerals, and it hosts some of the most electricity-intensive industrial sites on the planet, including the Tomago, Boyne and Portland aluminium smelters. Those plants have spent years grappling with rising power prices and uncertain long-term supply, and their emissions sit squarely inside the national decarbonisation challenge. A credible way to run them on cleaner, AI-optimised energy would land directly on one of the country’s thorniest climate and industrial problems.

There is a national ambition at stake as well. Figures across government and industry, including Fortescue’s Andrew Forrest, have argued that Australia should move up the value chain and process its minerals domestically using renewable power, rather than shipping raw ore offshore. That vision of “green metals” made with Australian sun and wind depends on exactly the kind of firming and load-management technology Envision is marketing. If systems like this work as advertised, they strengthen the case that energy-intensive processing can stay competitive onshore. If they underdeliver, the argument that smelting belongs wherever power is cheapest and most reliable gains ground again.

For Australian mining and energy executives walking the floor at All Energy, the launch is also a signal about where the market is heading. The conversation in the resources sector has shifted from whether to decarbonise to how, and increasingly to who supplies the integrated kit that makes it possible. International vendors clearly see Australia as a priority market for that technology, and Envision’s decision to debut the offering here rather than elsewhere reflects the scale of the opportunity.

What’s next

The practical test will be deployment. Trade-show launches are a statement of intent, and the real measure will be whether Envision can sign Australian miners or smelters to pilot projects and then publish verifiable data on reliability, emissions reductions and cost. Resources companies will want to see the system perform through a full seasonal cycle, including the kind of still, cloudy stretches that expose the limits of variable generation, before committing production assets to it.

Investors and policymakers will be watching too. Federal programs supporting green metals and critical minerals processing, along with state efforts to firm up industrial power supply, create a backdrop in which proven energy-management technology could attract funding and offtake interest. For now, Envision has planted a flag in a market it clearly rates highly, and the burden shifts to showing that an AI layer can do what decades of engineering have found so difficult: keep the smelters running on clean power without missing a beat.
