Ask a room full of Australian investors which company will own the next decade of artificial intelligence and you will get a dozen confident answers, most of them wrong. That uncomfortable truth sits at the heart of a new argument doing the rounds in the local investing press, which suggests the smarter play for ordinary punters is not to pick the breakout AI star at all, but to buy the whole field through low-cost exchange-traded funds listed on the ASX.

Australia can’t win the AI arms race, and Petre says that’s fine

Lead the AI revolution or fall behind, Australia warned

The case was laid out this week by The Motley Fool Australia, which argued that rather than agonise over which single business will emerge as the dominant force in AI, investors would be better served owning a basket of companies through three ASX-traded funds. The logic is familiar to anyone who has watched a hot sector before: the technology may well reshape the economy, but that does not mean the market has correctly guessed which listed company will capture the lion’s share of the profit.

The context: an AI trade running hot

The timing is not accidental. Global markets have been gripped by AI enthusiasm for the better part of two years, and the froth has washed up on Australian shores. Local names with even a tangential link to the theme have been bid up sharply, from data-centre operators and chip designers to software firms that have bolted the word “AI” onto their investor decks. On the ASX, the pattern has been pronounced among small and mid-cap stocks, where a single product announcement can send a share price soaring or sliding in a session.

That volatility is precisely the problem the ETF argument is trying to solve. Picking the eventual winner requires an investor to be right twice: right that AI will deliver, and right about which specific company will bank the returns. History is littered with technologies that transformed daily life while bankrupting most of the companies that pioneered them. The early internet minted a handful of giants and buried thousands of hopefuls, and plenty of the eventual champions were not even listed when the hype first peaked.

The news: a vote for diversification

Against that backdrop, the Fool’s pitch is that a diversified fund spreads the risk across dozens or hundreds of businesses, so that the inevitable duds are offset by the handful that run hot. An investor who owns the index does not need to tip the winner, because they already own it alongside everything else. For a cost of a fraction of a per cent a year, the argument goes, that is a cheaper and calmer way to hold exposure to the theme than building a concentrated portfolio of individual tech bets and hoping.

Exchange-traded funds have become the default vehicle for this kind of thinking in Australia. The local ETF market has swelled past a quarter of a trillion dollars in assets, driven heavily by self-directed investors and self-managed super funds that want broad exposure without the research burden of stock selection. Technology and global-equity funds have been among the fastest growers, which makes the AI question a live one for a very large slice of the investing public.

Two ways to see it

The diversification camp has decades of academic weight behind it. Study after study has shown that the majority of active stock pickers, professionals included, fail to beat a simple index over the long run once fees are stripped out. For an amateur trying to identify the single AI champion from the outside, the odds are longer still. Owning the market, the argument runs, is not an admission of defeat but a recognition of how hard the game actually is.

The counterview is that broad funds also dilute the upside. The investors who bought a single transformative company early and held on have made fortunes that no index could match, and a diversified basket by definition waters down the effect of any one rocket. There is also a subtler risk hiding inside the ETF solution. Many of the most popular technology and global-growth funds are heavily weighted toward the same cluster of giant American technology names, so an investor who thinks they are spreading risk may in fact be making one very large, concentrated bet on a handful of companies dressed up as diversification. Reading the underlying holdings matters more than reading the fund’s name.

What it means for Australia

For Australian investors the debate carries a particular edge, because the local market offers only a thin menu of genuine AI exposure. The ASX is dominated by banks and miners, and its technology sector is small by global standards. That pushes anyone chasing the theme either toward a short list of speculative local tech stocks or toward globally focused ETFs that hold their AI exposure offshore. The structure of our market, in other words, makes the stock-picking path especially fraught here, which is part of why the fund-based approach resonates with a local audience.

There is a regulatory and cultural dimension too. The explosive growth of self-managed super has put portfolio construction decisions in the hands of hundreds of thousands of everyday Australians, many of whom are navigating a genuine investment mania for the first time. Consumer advocates and the corporate regulator have repeatedly warned about retail investors piling into hot sectors near the top, and the AI trade fits the profile of exactly the kind of theme that can tempt inexperienced money into concentrated, poorly understood positions.

What’s next

None of this settles whether the broader AI rally is justified or whether a reckoning is coming, a question that has split some of the biggest names in global finance. What the ETF argument offers is a way to sidestep that call altogether: own the theme broadly, keep costs low, and accept that you will never own the single best performer in exchange for never being wiped out by backing the wrong horse.

For Australians weighing the choice, the practical takeaway is less about which three funds a commentator happens to favour and more about the discipline underneath the pitch. Check what a fund actually holds, understand how concentrated it really is, and be honest about whether you are buying diversification or simply buying the same crowded trade with a different label. The next AI superstar may well be out there. The harder question is whether anyone can reliably pick it in advance, and the growing popularity of ETFs suggests a lot of local investors have quietly decided the answer is no.
