AI adoption could add $93 billion to the economy, report says

Australia has spent the past two years debating whether artificial intelligence is a productivity miracle or an overhyped distraction. A new piece of economic modelling tries to settle the argument with a single, eye-catching figure: get adoption right, and the technology could add roughly AUD $93 billion to the national economy.

The number comes from a report covered by IT Brief Australia, drawing on analysis circulated through state innovation bodies. It lands at a moment when the national conversation has shifted from whether to adopt AI to how quickly, and at what cost. For business leaders who have watched a procession of eye-watering projections float past, the figure is less interesting as a precise forecast than as a signal of where the economic debate is heading.

What the report actually argues

The headline is the dollar figure, but the more useful material sits underneath it. The analysis frames the $93 billion not as money that appears automatically, but as a potential uplift that depends on how broadly and how well Australian organisations put AI to work. In other words, it is a ceiling that the country reaches only if adoption spreads beyond the handful of large firms and tech-forward sectors that have already embraced the tools.

That distinction matters because it reframes the policy question. The gain is not treated as a windfall from simply buying the technology. It is presented as the reward for a harder task: redesigning workflows, retraining staff, cleaning up data and building the governance that lets a business trust an AI system enough to lean on it. On that reading, the number is really a measure of execution rather than of the technology itself.

The analysis also leans on a now-familiar theme in Australian economic commentary, which is the country’s stubborn productivity problem. Treasury and the Productivity Commission have spent years warning that output per worker has barely budged, and AI is increasingly cast as one of the few levers large enough to shift that dial. A projection of this size feeds directly into that argument, giving the technology a concrete place in the national productivity story.

Optimists and sceptics

Supporters of the rosier view argue that the modelling, if anything, understates the opportunity. They point to generative tools that are already compressing hours of drafting, coding and analysis into minutes, and to the speed at which capability has improved. On this view, the economic case is not speculative. It is visible in the day-to-day work of marketing teams, software developers and customer-service operations that have quietly rewired how they operate over the past 18 months.

The sceptics are not persuaded, and their caution has become more pointed as the hype has grown. Headline economic projections for new technologies have a long history of disappointing, and a recurring criticism is that these numbers assume a smoothness of adoption that rarely survives contact with the real world. Legacy systems, risk-averse boards, patchy data and a shortage of people who can actually deploy the tools all drag on the pace of change. A growing body of commentary has also warned that many corporate AI pilots never make it into production, stranding investment without delivering the promised returns.

There is a middle position that is arguably the most useful. It accepts that the economic prize is real and large, while insisting that capturing it is a management and workforce challenge as much as a technological one. Under that framing, a $93 billion figure is best read as a target that rewards disciplined, well-governed adoption and punishes organisations that treat AI as a box to tick.

Why this matters for Australia

For Australia specifically, the stakes are sharpened by the shape of the economy. This is a services-heavy, white-collar-heavy labour market, which is precisely the kind of work that current AI tools are best suited to augment. That makes the potential upside unusually relevant here, but it also means the disruption lands closer to home than in economies built more around manufacturing or heavy industry.

The same structural features expose the familiar Australian constraints. The country faces a persistent shortage of digital and AI skills, a reliance on offshore cloud and model providers, and a small-business sector that often lacks the capital and in-house expertise to experiment safely. A projection of this size implicitly assumes that small and medium enterprises, which employ the bulk of Australian workers, join the adoption wave rather than watching from the sidelines. If the gains concentrate in big corporates and the major cities, the national figure may be met while regional and smaller players fall further behind.

There is also a sovereignty thread running through all of this. Much of the current Australian policy debate, from sovereign AI capability to data-centre investment, turns on whether the country can capture the value of the technology domestically rather than simply importing it. An economic uplift of this scale is more attractive to policymakers if a meaningful share stays onshore, flowing to local firms, local workers and local infrastructure rather than offshore vendors.

What happens next

The immediate test is whether a striking number translates into decisions. State innovation bodies have an obvious interest in using figures like this to justify skills programs, adoption grants and support for small business, and the report is likely to surface in those conversations. Federal policy is already circling the same territory, with ongoing work on AI guardrails, safe deployment in sensitive sectors and the workforce transition that broad adoption implies.

For businesses, the practical takeaway is less about the specific dollar figure and more about the message beneath it. The economic case for AI is now mainstream enough to be modelled in the tens of billions, but the returns are conditional. They flow to organisations that move past experimentation, invest in their people and build the trust and governance that let them deploy at scale. The gap between the firms that do that work and those that do not is where this projection will ultimately be won or lost.
