Darwin school’s homemade AI writing tool lands global honour

While much of the national conversation about artificial intelligence in schools has fixated on cheating, chatbots and the risk of students outsourcing their thinking, a public primary school in Darwin has quietly taken the opposite path. Rather than banning the technology or waiting for a commercial product to arrive, Larrakeyah Primary School set out to build its own AI writing platform, designed around the way children actually learn to write. The effort has now earned it international recognition.

Larrakeyah was named a finalist for the Global Schools Prize, an award chosen from more than 3,000 nominations from around the world. For a modest government school in the Northern Territory to make the shortlist is no small thing, and it lands at a moment when Australian educators, parents and policymakers are still working out what responsible AI use in the classroom should even look like.

The story was told in a recent episode of Teacher Magazine’s School Improvement podcast, produced by the Australian Council for Educational Research. In the episode, host Dominique Beech speaks with the school’s Fathma Mauger about how the custom-built tool came together and why the school chose to develop something itself rather than reach for an off-the-shelf app.

Why build rather than buy

The decision to build in-house is the part of this story that should interest anyone watching the education technology market. Australian schools are being courted by a growing number of vendors selling AI-powered marking, feedback and writing assistants, many of them expensive and few of them designed with a specific classroom in mind. By developing a platform tailored to its own teaching approach, Larrakeyah kept control of how the tool behaves, what it emphasises and how it fits the curriculum, rather than bending its practice to suit someone else’s software.

The pitch behind the platform, as described on the podcast, is that AI can support the writing process without doing the writing for the student. That distinction matters. The fear that haunts most conversations about generative AI in schools is that pupils will simply hand a prompt to a chatbot and copy the result. A tool built to scaffold drafting, prompt revision and give targeted feedback aims to do the reverse, keeping the child’s own thinking at the centre while lightening the load on teachers who cannot possibly give individual attention to every sentence every student writes.

Two ways of reading the achievement

Supporters of this kind of home-grown approach argue that it is exactly what the sector needs. Teachers understand their students in a way that a distant product team never will, and giving educators the means to shape their own tools produces something that actually fits the classroom. On this view, Larrakeyah’s finalist status is proof that thoughtful, locally designed technology can compete with slick commercial offerings, and that innovation does not have to come from a well-funded private school or a Silicon Valley startup.

Sceptics will raise fair questions. Building and maintaining bespoke software is demanding, and much of it here appears to have leaned on the drive of individual staff. What happens when key people move on? Can a tool developed by one school be evaluated rigorously enough to show it genuinely improves writing, rather than simply feeling modern and impressive? And there is the broader worry that runs through all AI-in-education debates, namely whether heavy reliance on machine feedback risks flattening the messy, human business of learning to express yourself. These are not reasons to dismiss the project, but they are the questions any honest assessment has to sit with.

What it means for Australia

The national stakes here are larger than one school in Darwin. Australia has spent much of the past year arguing about AI at the level of policy and infrastructure, from the federal government’s moves towards an office for artificial intelligence to debates over data centres, copyright and sovereign capability. Far less attention has gone to the ground level, where teachers are already making daily decisions about how, and whether, to let students use these tools. Larrakeyah offers a rare concrete example of a school not just tolerating AI but shaping it on its own terms.

It also complicates the familiar assumption that innovation flows from the big cities and the well-resourced institutions. A government primary school in the Territory, a jurisdiction that regularly features in national conversations about educational disadvantage, has produced something that drew international notice. That should prompt education departments and the new federal AI apparatus to ask how such initiatives can be supported, evaluated and, where they work, shared with other schools rather than left to depend on the energy of a few committed staff.

There is a policy vacuum to fill. Australian teachers have been asking for clearer guidance on classroom AI use, and much of the official material so far has been cautious and high-level. Real, working examples of what good practice looks like are worth more than another framework, and they are exactly what is in short supply. A platform that keeps the student writing while using AI to support the craft is the kind of case study the sector can learn from.

What’s next

The immediate question is whether Larrakeyah’s approach can travel. Recognition from the Global Schools Prize brings attention, but sustaining and spreading the platform will take more than a shortlisting. The school will need to show, over time, that the tool measurably helps children become better writers, and education authorities will need to decide whether to invest in the messier work of turning one school’s initiative into something other schools can adopt.

For now, the achievement stands as a useful corrective to the gloom that dominates so much AI-in-schools commentary. Amid all the anxiety about students cheating and thinking less, here is a school that treated the technology as something to be understood, built and directed, and got noticed by the world for doing it. Whether Australia’s education system is set up to nurture more stories like this, rather than let them happen by accident, is the harder question.
