Netgear leans on MSPs, AI and security to court Australian SMEs

Netgear, the company most Australians know from the router blinking away in a spare bedroom, is trying to convince the business world to take it seriously. The vendor has signalled a sharper focus on managed service providers, artificial intelligence and built-in security as the levers it will pull to grow inside small and midsize enterprises, according to a report by CRN Australia. The strategy is a familiar one for hardware makers under pressure: move up the value chain, lean on the channel, and wrap recurring services around boxes that are becoming harder to differentiate on specifications alone.

Weel’s spending index tracks who Australian business actually pays for AI

It is worth understanding why the pivot matters. Netgear built its name in the consumer market, where margins are thin and buyers replace gear only when it breaks. The commercial side of the business, sold under the banner of Netgear for Business, has long been the smaller and less glamorous sibling. Yet it is also where the growth story lives, because small and midsize firms are buying more switches, wireless access points and network management than ever as they digitise operations, and they rarely have the in-house expertise to run any of it themselves. That gap is exactly what a managed service provider fills.

Why the MSP channel is the centre of gravity

Managed service providers have become the connective tissue of the SME technology market. A small accounting firm in Parramatta or a manufacturer in Dandenong is unlikely to employ a network engineer, so it hands the whole problem to an MSP that manages dozens or hundreds of clients from a single dashboard. For a vendor like Netgear, winning the MSP is more valuable than winning any individual customer, because the MSP makes the buying decision for its entire book of business and sticks with kit it trusts.

That is why the company is reported to be sharpening its tools for these partners, including cloud-based management that lets a technician configure and monitor equipment across many sites without driving to each one. The commercial logic is straightforward. If the management platform is good enough, the MSP standardises on it, the switching hardware follows, and the relationship becomes recurring rather than transactional. The competition here is fierce, with Cisco Meraki, HPE Aruba Networking, Ubiquiti and Extreme Networks all chasing the same partners, so Netgear is arguing that it can offer capable hardware at a friendlier price with less licensing complexity.

AI and security as the sweeteners

The AI angle, at this stage of the industry, is less about autonomous networks and more about taking work off a busy technician’s plate. Vendors across the category are folding machine learning into their management consoles to flag anomalies, suggest configuration fixes, predict when hardware is likely to fail and cut down the noise of routine alerts. For an MSP running lean, anything that reduces the number of truck rolls and after-hours callouts translates directly into profit, and that is the promise Netgear is making.

Security is the other pillar, and it may be the more persuasive one. Small and midsize businesses have become the soft underbelly of the cyber landscape, targeted precisely because they lack the defences of larger corporates. Baking segmentation, threat detection and secure remote access into the network layer, rather than bolting it on afterwards, is an easier sell to a customer who has read one too many headlines about ransomware. By positioning security as a native feature of its business gear, Netgear is trying to turn a grudge purchase into a value proposition that an MSP can mark up and resell.

The Australian stakes

For the Australian market, this repositioning lands on fertile ground. The country has a deep and mature managed services sector, with thousands of MSPs serving the small business economy that employs the bulk of the national workforce. Those providers are hungry for platforms that let them scale without hiring, because skilled network and security staff remain scarce and expensive right across the eastern seaboard and beyond.

The security dimension carries particular weight here. Australia has spent the past few years absorbing the fallout of major breaches at Optus, Medibank and Latitude, and the federal government has been steadily lifting expectations around cyber resilience for organisations of every size. Small businesses that once treated security as optional are now being nudged, by insurers, by regulators and by their own larger customers, to demonstrate that they have sensible protections in place. A networking vendor that can hand an Australian MSP an affordable, security-forward package aimed at that exact anxiety is pushing at an open door.

There is also a distribution reality to consider. Netgear reaches Australian resellers and MSPs through the established two-tier channel, and its success will hinge on whether local distributors and partners believe the commercial line of business is a serious, well-supported bet rather than a sideline. Australian partners have a long memory for vendors that talk up the channel one year and neglect it the next, so consistency of investment will matter as much as the product roadmap.

Two ways to read the move

The optimistic view is that Netgear is playing to a genuine strength. Its business hardware has a reputation for being solid and keenly priced, and if the management, AI and security layers are credible, it can win price-sensitive SMEs that find the market leaders too expensive and too complicated. Plenty of MSPs would welcome a viable alternative that keeps the incumbents honest on cost.

The sceptical view is that every networking vendor on the planet is now reciting the same three words, MSP, AI and security, and saying them is far easier than delivering them. Netgear is chasing partners who already have entrenched relationships with rivals that have spent years and enormous sums building cloud platforms and partner programs. Shifting an MSP’s loyalty is slow, expensive work, and a brand still strongly associated with consumer gear has an extra layer of perception to overcome in the boardrooms where these decisions are ratified.

What is next

The proof will be in the execution over the coming year: the depth of the partner program, how much of the AI and security capability ships as real product rather than roadmap, and whether Australian distributors put their weight behind it. If Netgear can convert its price advantage into genuine MSP loyalty, it has a plausible path into a market segment that is only getting larger. If it cannot, this will read as one more hardware maker reaching for the same buzzwords as everyone else. For Australian SMEs and the providers who serve them, more credible competition on price and security is a welcome development either way.
