Most Americans don’t want an AI data centre next door

The physical footprint of artificial intelligence is becoming impossible to ignore, and a growing number of people simply do not want it in their backyard. A new poll reported by PCMag Australia has found that a majority of Americans would prefer not to live near one of the vast AI data centres now spreading across the United States. It is a finding that lands squarely in the middle of Australia’s own rush to build the infrastructure that powers the AI economy.

The $7 trillion question hanging over Australia’s AI IPO race

Cloud maturity is exposing Australia’s AI readiness gap

The context

Data centres are the engine rooms of the AI boom. Every chatbot answer, every generated image and every model trained on billions of parameters relies on warehouses full of servers running around the clock. As demand for generative AI has exploded, the companies behind it have committed staggering sums to building more of these facilities, often in regional or semi-rural areas where land and power are cheaper. What was once an invisible piece of the internet’s plumbing has become a visible, and increasingly contentious, neighbour.

The trouble is that the qualities which make data centres essential also make them unpopular company. They draw enormous amounts of electricity, they consume large volumes of water for cooling, and the biggest sites can cover the equivalent of dozens of football fields. Backup generators, constant truck movements during construction and the low hum of industrial cooling systems all add to the sense, for nearby residents, that something heavy has moved in next door.

The news

The poll’s central message is blunt: when asked whether they would be comfortable living close to an AI data centre, most respondents said no. The reluctance cuts across the usual assumption that people welcome the jobs and investment such projects promise. It suggests that for all the enthusiasm about AI as a technology, the public is markedly cooler about hosting its physical infrastructure on the next block.

That gap between abstract support and local acceptance is familiar to anyone who has watched debates over wind farms, transmission lines or waste facilities. Economists call it the “not in my backyard” problem, and it has a habit of slowing projects that look sensible on a spreadsheet but feel intrusive on the ground. The poll indicates AI data centres are now firmly inside that category, joining a long list of infrastructure that communities value in theory and resist in practice.

Two ways to read it

Industry advocates argue the resistance reflects a lack of information rather than genuine harm. Modern data centres, they point out, are quiet by industrial standards, employ increasingly efficient cooling, and can be sited to minimise disruption. From this perspective, the poll is a communications failure as much as anything: developers have not done enough to explain what these facilities are, what they contribute in rates and jobs, and why the trade-offs are worth it. Better community engagement, on this view, would soften the opposition considerably.

Critics see something more substantive. They note that the strain data centres place on electricity grids and water supplies is real and measurable, and that host communities often bear those costs while the profits flow elsewhere. When a single facility can consume as much power as a small city, questions about who pays for grid upgrades, and whether local households face higher bills or tighter water restrictions, are entirely reasonable. For these observers, the poll is not misinformation at work but a rational response to a genuine imbalance between local burden and distant benefit.

What it means for Australia

Australia is not a bystander to this story. The country is in the middle of its own data-centre build-out, with international operators and local players alike pouring capital into new capacity to serve the AI boom. FluentSea has reported on the regional dimension of that rush, from the emerging cluster around Wagga Wagga to the infrastructure spending driving companies such as Megaport on the ASX. The same tensions that the American poll captures are already brewing here, and the Australian context arguably sharpens them.

Water is the obvious flashpoint. In a country that lives with drought and tight allocations across the Murray-Darling and beyond, a facility drinking millions of litres for cooling is a genuinely fraught proposition in some regions. Electricity is the other. Australia’s grid is mid-transition, closing coal plants while ramping up renewables and storage, and adding large, always-on industrial loads complicates that already delicate balancing act. If regional communities come to see data centres as competing with households for power and water, the sort of resistance the poll documents in the United States could easily take root in New South Wales, Queensland or Victoria.

There is also an economic development angle that Australian policymakers cannot ignore. Governments at every level have talked up the ambition to make Australia a place that builds AI rather than merely hosts it, and data centres are the foundation of that goal. But the poll is a reminder that sovereign capability has a local cost. Winning community consent, through genuine benefit-sharing, transparent water and energy commitments and honest conversations about the downsides, will be as important to the build-out as securing chips and capital. A project that stalls in the planning system because residents feel steamrolled is no use to anyone.

What’s next

Expect the friction to grow before it eases. As more sites are proposed and more people find themselves living within sight of one, local objections are likely to feature more prominently in planning hearings and council debates on both sides of the Pacific. The operators who navigate that landscape best will be the ones who treat community sentiment as a core part of the project rather than an afterthought, offering concrete commitments on power sourcing, water recycling and local jobs.

For Australia, the American poll is a useful early warning. The demand for AI infrastructure is not going to slow, and the country has good reasons to want a share of it. But the lesson from across the Pacific is that the public will judge these projects not on the promise of the technology, but on what it feels like to live beside it. Getting that judgement right, before the backlash hardens, is the task now facing developers and governments alike.
