Food super fund bets on responsible AI to lift member engagement

Superannuation is one of the largest pools of money in the country, worth more than $4 trillion, yet the industry has long struggled with a stubborn problem: most Australians barely engage with their fund until they are close to retirement, and by then many of the decisions that would have made the biggest difference have already been made by default. Australian Food Super is now wagering that artificial intelligence can help close that gap, launching a member-facing platform it calls RetireSmart+ and positioning itself as one of the first funds in the country to build a member engagement experience around what it describes as responsible AI.

The fund, which serves workers across the food and grocery sector, says the tool is designed to move beyond the annual statement and the occasional email. Instead of waiting for members to log in and hunt for information, RetireSmart+ is meant to surface tailored prompts about contributions, investment options and retirement readiness at moments when they are most likely to matter. According to Australian FinTech, the fund is presenting the launch as a redefinition of how superannuation members interact with their savings, rather than a simple chatbot bolted onto an existing app.

Why engagement is the industry’s white whale

The context here matters. Regulators and consumer advocates have spent years pointing out that low engagement is not a harmless quirk of the system but a driver of poor outcomes. Members who never review their investment mix can sit in a default option that no longer suits their age or goals. Members who lose track of old accounts pay duplicate fees. Members who reach their sixties without a plan often make rushed choices about drawdown, the age pension and lump sums. The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority has repeatedly pressed funds to demonstrate they are acting in members’ best financial interests, and engagement is increasingly treated as part of that obligation rather than a marketing nicety.

That is the space RetireSmart+ is trying to occupy. By using AI to personalise what each member sees, the fund argues it can turn a passive relationship into an active one, catching people earlier in their working lives when small changes to contributions compound into meaningful differences by retirement. The pitch is that responsible AI, rather than generic mass communication, is what finally makes personalisation affordable at the scale of a whole membership base.

Two ways to read the launch

There are competing views on how much weight to put on announcements like this. Supporters within the sector see AI-driven engagement as overdue. Financial technology commentators have argued for some time that superannuation funds have underinvested in digital experience compared with banks and neobanks, and that members now expect the same standard of personalisation from their fund that they get from a streaming service or a shopping app. On this reading, a fund the size of Australian Food Super moving early is a signal that the technology has matured enough for institutions that are naturally cautious with member money.

The more sceptical view is that the phrase responsible AI is doing a lot of work, and that the label needs to be backed by detail the launch has not yet made public. Superannuation sits under strict rules about financial advice. There is a real and consequential line between general information, which a fund can provide freely, and personal advice, which triggers a raft of legal obligations and consumer protections. An AI system that nudges a member toward a particular contribution level or investment option risks drifting across that line if it is not carefully constrained. Consumer advocates will also want to know how the fund guards against the model reinforcing poor choices, how it handles the sensitive financial data it relies on, and whether members can understand and challenge the prompts they receive. None of those questions is unique to this fund, but they become sharper the moment a system starts shaping decisions about people’s retirement savings.

What it means for Australia

For the broader market, the launch is less interesting as a single product than as a test case. Australia’s superannuation system is compulsory and enormous, which means any technology that changes how funds talk to members has the potential to touch nearly every working adult in the country. If responsible AI can lift engagement without crossing into unlicensed advice or mishandling data, it offers a template that larger industry and retail funds will study closely, and possibly copy. If it stumbles, whether through a compliance misstep, a privacy breach or simply prompts that members find intrusive, it will hand ammunition to those who argue the sector should be conservative about deploying AI on member-facing systems at all.

The timing also matters because Australia is in the middle of a wider debate about how AI should be governed. The federal government has been building out its policy machinery, including a new national approach to AI oversight, and financial services is one of the areas where the tension between innovation and consumer protection is most acute. A superannuation fund putting AI directly in front of members is exactly the kind of real-world deployment that regulators and policymakers will point to as they decide how prescriptive the rules need to be. Local privacy law, the ongoing reforms to the Privacy Act, and the existing financial advice framework all bear on whether tools like RetireSmart+ can scale safely.

What happens next

The practical questions now are about evidence. Announcing a platform is straightforward, but the value of RetireSmart+ will be judged on whether it actually shifts behaviour: more members reviewing their options, more consolidating lost accounts, more arriving at retirement with a plan rather than a scramble. Funds that have tried digital engagement initiatives before know that early enthusiasm does not always translate into sustained use, and the metrics that matter, such as retention, contribution rates and retirement readiness, take years to move.

It will also be worth watching how the fund describes the guardrails as the rollout progresses. Genuinely responsible AI in this setting means being explicit about where the general information ends and personal advice begins, being transparent with members about how their data is used, and being able to explain why the system suggested what it did. For now, Australian Food Super has planted a flag as an early mover. Whether that turns into a durable advantage, or simply a cautionary tale that the rest of the sector learns from, will depend on the parts of the story that a launch announcement rarely covers.
