Brisbane founder’s cardiac arrest inspires Zelia health app

When a health crisis lands on you without warning, the paperwork that follows can feel almost as overwhelming as the event itself. A wallet full of prescriptions, a diary of symptoms, a stack of specialist letters and a memory that struggles to hold it all together when a doctor asks how you have been feeling. That gap between what patients live through and what they can actually recall in a ten-minute consultation is the problem a new Brisbane start-up says it wants to close.

Lovara & Co has launched Zelia, an AI-enabled medication and health management app built in the wake of a co-founder’s brush with death. According to Pulse+IT, the app grew out of the recovery of co-founder Roel Wijmans, who survived a cardiac arrest and two strokes. The experience of navigating his own treatment, medications and follow-up care convinced him that ordinary patients needed better tools to stay on top of their health between appointments.

What Zelia actually does

At its core, Zelia is a personal health record that patients control. Users can log the medications they take, record symptoms as they occur, and capture vital signs such as blood pressure and heart rate. The app draws data from Apple Health, so readings already collected by a phone or a smartwatch can flow in without being typed out by hand. The AI element sits on top of that data, compiling a plain-language summary that a patient can bring to a GP or specialist ahead of a visit.

The pitch is simple enough to grasp. Rather than arriving at an appointment and trying to reconstruct weeks of symptoms from memory, a patient hands their doctor a tidy snapshot of what has been happening. For people managing chronic conditions, juggling several medications, or recovering from a serious event like a stroke, that continuity of record can be the difference between a productive consultation and a scramble. Lovara & Co is based in Brisbane and is entering a market where consumer health apps are plentiful but genuinely useful ones, the kind clinicians will actually look at, remain harder to find.

A founder’s story as product roadmap

There is a long tradition of health technology born from personal misfortune, and Zelia fits squarely within it. Founders who have been patients tend to design for the parts of the journey that spreadsheets and clinical workflows miss: the anxiety of not knowing whether a symptom matters, the frustration of repeating your history to every new clinician, the quiet fear of forgetting a dose. Wijmans lived that after his cardiac arrest and strokes, and the app reflects a patient’s priorities rather than a hospital administrator’s.

That origin is also a marketing asset in a crowded category, and it is worth being clear-eyed about both sides. On one hand, lived experience gives a product credibility and a sharper sense of what patients need day to day. On the other, a compelling founder story is not the same thing as clinical validation, and the real test for any health app is whether doctors trust its outputs and whether patients keep using it beyond the first fortnight. Retention is the graveyard of consumer health tech, where enthusiasm at download rarely survives contact with everyday life.

The case for and against AI in the pocket

Supporters of tools like Zelia argue that they shift some agency back to the patient. Australia’s health system leans heavily on general practitioners as coordinators, yet those GPs often see a patient for only a few minutes and rely almost entirely on what the person in front of them can remember and articulate. An app that quietly gathers vital signs, tracks medications and produces a structured summary could make those minutes count for more, particularly for older Australians managing multiple conditions at once.

Sceptics will point to the familiar risks. AI-generated summaries can mislead if the underlying data is patchy or if the model smooths over something that mattered. There are privacy questions whenever sensitive health information is collected on a phone and processed by software, and questions of liability if a summary omits a red flag. Digital health advocates in Australia have consistently warned that consumer apps must be careful not to blur into medical advice, and that a summary handed to a clinician is only as good as the patient’s discipline in feeding it accurate information. None of that makes the idea unsound, but it does mean the value lives in the execution.

What it means for Australia

Zelia arrives at a moment when Australia is trying to work out what good digital health looks like at national scale. My Health Record has been rolling out for years with mixed uptake, the federal government continues to push the digitisation of records, and interoperability between systems remains a stubborn challenge. A patient-controlled app that consolidates data and speaks the language of a GP visit could complement those official efforts, sitting in the space between a person’s daily life and the formal record.

The economics matter too. Chronic disease is one of the largest drivers of health spending in Australia, and better self-management is one of the few levers that can ease pressure on GPs and hospitals without cutting services. If tools like Zelia help patients turn up to appointments better prepared and stick more closely to their medication regimes, the payoff is not just individual wellbeing but a small dent in system-wide cost. That is the optimistic case. The realistic one is that adoption will hinge on trust, on whether clinicians embrace the summaries, and on whether the app clears the regulatory and privacy bar that Australian patients rightly expect.

For Brisbane, the launch is another marker of a health-tech scene that has been quietly building beyond the traditional Sydney and Melbourne axis. Queensland has invested in medical research and digital health capability for years, and a locally grown start-up tackling a universal problem adds to that story.

What’s next

The immediate question for Lovara & Co is uptake. A health app succeeds or fails on whether people use it consistently and whether the professionals on the other side of the desk find its output worth reading. Expect the company to court GPs and specialists, since their endorsement is what turns a consumer download into a genuine clinical aid. Watch too for how Zelia handles data privacy and any move toward integration with Australia’s broader digital health infrastructure, which would signal ambitions beyond a standalone app. For now, a founder who nearly did not make it has turned his recovery into a product, and the market will decide whether the rest of us find it useful.
