A $2 billion founder’s plan to rebuild advertising with AI

Advertising has been promised a technology-led reinvention roughly once a decade, and the industry has learned to greet each one with a mix of excitement and fatigue. The latest pitch, and the one drawing the most money, is that generative artificial intelligence will finally do what programmatic buying and big-data targeting only half delivered: make every ad relevant, cheap to produce and impossible to ignore. A new profile in Forbes Australia puts a face and a fortune to that bet, tracing how a founder it values at roughly $2 billion is directing his company toward rebuilding advertising from the creative brief to the final impression around AI.

The news

The Forbes Australia profile lays out an ambition that goes well beyond bolting a chatbot onto an existing ad platform. The founder’s argument, as the magazine tells it, is that the whole production line of modern advertising is ripe for automation: the research that shapes a campaign, the copy and imagery that fill it, the decisions about who sees which version, and the measurement that tells a brand whether any of it worked. Where agencies once needed weeks and a room full of specialists, the promise is that a small team pointing AI models at a brand’s data can generate thousands of tailored variations and let the system learn, in close to real time, which ones land.

It is a familiar Silicon Valley framing, but the scale of the founder’s personal wealth is what makes the profile notable. A $2 billion valuation on the person, rather than just the business, signals that investors already believe advertising is one of the commercial arenas where AI will pay off fastest. That is not a fringe view. Global platforms have spent the past two years rolling out tools that write ad copy, generate product imagery and automatically assemble campaigns, and the founder profiled by Forbes is positioning his venture as a purer version of the same idea rather than a feature buried inside someone else’s dashboard.

Two ways to read it

To the believers, this is simply where the money and the maths point. Advertising is a data-rich, feedback-heavy business, exactly the kind of problem machine learning is built to attack, and the economics are hard to argue with. If a system can produce and test creative at a fraction of the cost of a traditional agency, smaller advertisers get access to sophistication that was previously reserved for the biggest spenders. Supporters of the approach say the winners will be brands that treat AI as a creative multiplier, freeing people to focus on strategy and storytelling while the machine handles the grind of variation and optimisation.

The sceptics are less convinced, and their worries are not only about jobs. A recurring criticism of AI-generated advertising is that it optimises for engagement rather than trust, flooding feeds and screens with content that is technically personalised but emotionally hollow. There is also the harder question of whether audiences will tolerate ads they know were produced by a machine, and whether the flood of synthetic creative will erode the credibility of advertising as a whole. Australian marketers have already flagged this tension. FluentSea has reported on growing distrust of AI in out-of-home advertising heading into 2026, and the same anxieties apply, arguably more sharply, to the highly targeted digital formats this founder is chasing.

What it means for Australia

Australia is a serious adtech market that punches above its population, and it has a track record of exporting advertising technology to the world. Homegrown companies have built globally significant businesses in the space, and the local industry has long argued that Australia’s mix of strong consumer brands, a concentrated media market and world-class engineering talent makes it a natural testbed for new advertising models. A $2 billion founder proving that AI-first advertising can work at scale would validate a thesis plenty of Australian operators are already pursuing, and it would sharpen the competitive pressure on agencies and platforms operating here.

The flip side is regulatory. Australia is in the middle of a broad rethink of how AI should be governed, from the new federal Office of AI to debates about transparency, copyright and automated decision-making. Advertising sits directly in the path of several of those conversations. If AI systems are generating imagery and personas at scale, questions about disclosure, about the data used to train and target campaigns, and about misleading or deceptive conduct under Australian Consumer Law all become live issues rather than hypotheticals. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has shown it is willing to test digital advertising practices in court, and an industry built on machine-generated persuasion will draw scrutiny it cannot easily wave away.

There is a creative-sector dimension too. Australia’s advertising, design and production workforce is sizeable, and the reinvention the Forbes profile describes cuts straight through it. The optimistic case is that AI handles the repetitive assembly work and lifts the value of human creative direction. The pessimistic case is that a large slice of entry-level and production roles simply disappears, hollowing out the pipeline that trains the next generation of talent. How Australian agencies and holding companies navigate that shift will shape whether the country remains a net exporter of advertising ideas or becomes a consumer of tools built elsewhere.

What’s next

The near-term test is commercial rather than philosophical. AI advertising ventures are raising and spending heavily, and the market will want to see durable revenue, retained clients and measurable results before it treats the reinvention as real rather than rhetorical. Watch for whether large Australian advertisers move meaningful budget toward AI-first production, and whether they are willing to say so publicly, given the reputational sensitivity around synthetic content. Watch, too, for how regulators respond as the tools become harder to distinguish from human-made work.

For now, the Forbes Australia profile is a useful marker of where capital and conviction are pooling. A founder worth $2 billion staking his company on AI advertising is a signal that the industry’s next reinvention has money behind it. Whether it earns the trust of the people it is trying to reach, in Australia and beyond, is the part no algorithm can optimise its way around.
