OpenAI launches Presence to put voice agents in the enterprise

The race to put a synthetic voice on the other end of the line has a new entrant with serious weight behind it. OpenAI, the company that made ChatGPT a household name, has launched Presence, a platform built to help large organisations design, deploy and manage voice agents across customer service, sales and internal support. The move, first reported by IT Brief Australia, signals that OpenAI wants a bigger share of the enterprise market, not just the consumer chatbot boom that made it famous.

What CBA’s AI push means for the next phase of Australian banking

Voice has quietly become one of the most contested frontiers in commercial AI. Text-based assistants are now commonplace, embedded in help desks, banking apps and email tools, but the spoken interface has lagged because it is far harder to get right. A voice agent has to listen, understand messy real-world speech, respond in something close to real time and sound natural enough that a frustrated caller does not immediately demand a human. Presence is OpenAI’s attempt to package the hard parts of that problem into a product businesses can pick up without building the plumbing themselves.

What Presence actually promises

At its core, Presence is pitched as an enterprise-grade layer for building and operating voice agents at scale. Rather than a single chatbot, it is meant to give companies the tools to spin up spoken assistants that can field inbound calls, handle routine queries, escalate to staff when needed and plug into the systems where customer records and business logic already live. The appeal for a large organisation is obvious: contact centres are expensive, hard to staff and notoriously difficult to keep consistent across thousands of daily conversations.

OpenAI is not arriving in an empty field. It is competing against a crowded set of rivals, from dedicated voice AI startups to the big cloud providers who already sell speech and contact-centre products to enterprises. What OpenAI brings is the underlying model quality that made its assistants popular in the first place, along with a brand that chief executives already recognise. The bet is that familiarity and model performance will pull large customers who have been experimenting with pilots but hesitating to commit to a full rollout.

Two ways to read the launch

Supporters of the technology argue that mature voice agents could finally deliver on a promise the industry has been making for years. A well-built agent can answer at three in the morning, never lose patience, handle a spike in call volume without a hiring scramble and free human staff to deal with the genuinely complex cases. For businesses drowning in repetitive enquiries about delivery times, account balances and appointment changes, the productivity case writes itself. If Presence lowers the technical barrier, more mid-sized firms could reach for automation that was previously the preserve of companies with deep engineering benches.

The sceptics are just as vocal, and they have history on their side. Automated phone systems have a long and unhappy relationship with the public, and a voice agent that mishears, loops or refuses to connect a real person can do more brand damage than no automation at all. There are also thornier questions about disclosure, consent and what happens when a convincing synthetic voice is used to handle sensitive conversations. Trust is the currency here, and it is easily spent. A poor deployment does not just annoy customers, it teaches them to distrust the next voice they hear.

What it means for Australia

For Australian organisations, the arrival of a heavyweight voice platform lands at a moment of real tension between ambition and caution. Local banks, telcos, retailers and government service providers run some of the busiest contact operations in the country, and the appetite to automate them is strong. Australian firms have consistently told researchers they are adopting AI faster than they are governing it, a gap that turns up again and again in local surveys of enterprise readiness. Voice agents raise that stakes further because a phone call feels more personal, and more legally loaded, than a web chat.

Regulation is the sharpest edge. Any Australian business deploying a voice agent has to navigate the Privacy Act, evolving expectations around AI transparency, and consumer protection rules that do not care whether the party making a misleading statement was a human or a model. Recorded calls, voice data and the handling of personal information all sit inside a framework that regulators have signalled they intend to tighten. A financial services firm that lets an agent discuss accounts, or a health provider that lets one triage patients, is taking on obligations that go well beyond the technology working as advertised. The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner and the competition regulator have both made clear that automation is not a shield from responsibility.

There is also a workforce dimension that Australian leaders cannot dismiss. Contact centres employ tens of thousands of people across the country, many in regional areas where those jobs are among the better-paid options available. A wave of capable voice agents raises legitimate questions about what happens to that workforce, and whether automation displaces roles or simply reshapes them toward supervision and complex problem-solving. The political conversation around AI and employment is already live in Canberra, and voice automation gives it a very human face.

What happens next

The near-term test for Presence is not the demo, it is the first wave of real deployments. Voice AI tends to impress in controlled conditions and stumble on the long tail of accents, background noise, interruptions and edge cases that define actual phone traffic. Australian accents and local slang have historically tripped up speech systems trained largely on North American data, so how well the product handles Broad Australian English will matter more here than in the markets where it was built. Enterprises will watch containment rates, the share of calls resolved without a human, and customer satisfaction scores before they scale.

For now, the launch cements a broader shift. OpenAI is no longer content to be the company behind a popular chatbot, and voice is the next surface it wants to own inside the enterprise. Australian businesses will not be able to ignore the pitch, but the ones that succeed will be those that treat a voice agent as a serious operational and legal commitment rather than a novelty on the phone line. The technology is arriving quickly. The judgement about where and how to use it will decide whether it earns trust or burns it.
