Blackbird makes record bet as Baseten hits $13b valuation

Australia’s largest venture capital firm has planted a flag in one of the hottest corners of the artificial intelligence economy, backing an American infrastructure company at a valuation that would have looked fanciful only a couple of years ago. Baseten, a San Francisco business that helps other companies run AI models quickly and cheaply, has been valued at roughly US$13 billion, and Blackbird Ventures is understood to have made the largest single investment in its history to get into the deal.

The news, first reported by CNA, lands at a moment when Australian investors are being asked hard questions about how much of the global AI boom they can realistically capture. Blackbird’s decision to lean in, rather than sit on the sidelines, is a statement about where the firm believes the durable value in this cycle sits.

What Baseten actually does

It helps to strip away the jargon. Baseten sells what the industry calls inference, the unglamorous but essential business of serving a trained AI model to real users at scale. Training a large model grabs the headlines, but inference is what happens every time someone types a prompt, generates an image or asks a chatbot a question, and it happens millions of times a day. Getting that to run fast, reliably and without burning through a fortune in compute is a genuine engineering problem, and it is the one Baseten has built its company around.

That positioning matters because it sits one layer below the flashy consumer products. Whichever AI applications end up winning, they all need somewhere to run, and companies like Baseten are selling the picks and shovels rather than betting on any single gold mine. Investors have warmed to that logic, which is part of why the company’s valuation has climbed so steeply in such a short window.

A record cheque from Blackbird

For Blackbird, the investment reads as a deliberate escalation. The firm built its reputation backing Australian and New Zealand founders early, most famously Canva and the space company Rocket Lab, and it has raised progressively larger funds on the strength of those wins. Writing its biggest ever cheque into a US infrastructure business signals a willingness to compete for allocation in marquee global rounds, not just to nurture local startups from seed.

There is a strategic reason to do that. Blackbird manages money on behalf of Australian superannuation funds and other institutions, and those backers expect exposure to the defining technology shift of the decade. If the best risk-adjusted returns in AI are being made in San Francisco rather than Surry Hills, a fund with a mandate to chase them can hardly ignore the fact. The counterargument, which Blackbird will have weighed, is that late-stage cheques at eleven-figure valuations offer far less upside than the early bets that made the firm’s name.

Two ways to read the valuation

Not everyone sees a US$13 billion price tag on an infrastructure company and cheers. The bullish case is straightforward: demand for AI inference is exploding, the workloads are sticky once a customer builds on your platform, and margins should improve as the technology matures. On that reading, today’s valuation is a down payment on a business that could be far larger.

The bearish case is equally coherent. Valuations across the AI stack have raced ahead of revenue, capital is chasing a narrow set of assets, and the sheer volume of money flowing into anything with an AI label has echoes of previous bubbles. Australian commentators have been making versions of this argument for months, and the Australian Financial Review among others has questioned whether the local enthusiasm for the AI boom is fully justified. A record cheque into a company valued at more than most ASX-listed businesses will do nothing to quiet those doubts.

Both readings can be true at once. Infrastructure may well be the right place to be exposed, and the entry price may still prove too high if growth slows or a hyperscaler decides to compete directly. That tension is the whole game in late-stage AI investing right now.

What it means for Australia

The Australian stakes here are less about Baseten’s technology and more about the plumbing of the local venture ecosystem. When Blackbird deploys capital at this scale, it is effectively channelling the retirement savings of ordinary Australians into the global AI race. If the bet pays off, the returns flow back to super funds and, eventually, to members. If it sours, the same members wear the loss, which is why the size and stage of these cheques deserves scrutiny beyond the usual startup cheerleading.

There is also a sovereignty angle that policymakers keep circling. Australia has spent the past year debating how to build domestic AI capability, from data centres straining the power grid to the newly created Office of AI. A firm as influential as Blackbird sending its largest ever investment offshore is a reminder that the most attractive opportunities are still being built elsewhere. It sharpens the question of whether Australia can grow companies of Baseten’s calibre at home, or whether the local role in this cycle will mainly be as a supplier of capital and, increasingly, of the land and electricity for data centres.

For Australian founders, the read is more encouraging. Blackbird’s global ambitions mean the firm is now credible in the biggest rooms in Silicon Valley, and that reputation tends to rub off on the companies it backs closer to home. A fund that can win allocation in a US$13 billion round is a fund that can open doors for the next Australian startup trying to raise from international investors.

What’s next

The immediate question is whether Baseten can grow into its valuation, and that will show up in its revenue and customer numbers over the coming year rather than in any single announcement. For Blackbird, the deal sets a new benchmark for how large its cheques can get, and it will invite pressure to show the strategy of chasing marquee global rounds delivers for its Australian backers. Watch, too, for whether other local funds follow Blackbird offshore or double down on building the domestic pipeline instead. Either way, an Australian firm has just made itself impossible to ignore in the part of the AI economy that everything else depends on.
