Zip finds Australians embracing AI to shop, but wary of ceding control

Australians have never been shy about hunting for a bargain, and a new body of research suggests the tools they reach for are changing fast. Buy-now-pay-later provider Zip has released findings pointing to a sharp rise in shoppers using artificial intelligence to research products, compare prices and sharpen their purchasing decisions, even as those same consumers insist on keeping the final say for themselves.

The shift matters because it lands at the intersection of two things Australians care about deeply: their household budgets and their sense of being in control of how they spend. According to Zip’s research, AI is quietly moving from novelty to habit at the top of the shopping funnel, the stage where people are weighing options rather than tapping to pay.

From search bar to shopping assistant

For most of the past two decades, the online shopping journey started with a search engine and a scatter of open browser tabs. What the Zip data describes is a reordering of that ritual. Rather than sifting through pages of results, a growing share of shoppers are asking AI tools to do the legwork: to summarise reviews, line up comparable products, flag the cheaper option and explain the trade-offs in plain language.

That behaviour tracks with what retail analysts have been watching globally. Generative AI has made it far easier to ask a messy, human question, something like “which of these two washing machines is quieter and cheaper to run”, and get a usable answer without wading through spec sheets. For time-poor households juggling rising living costs, the appeal is obvious. The research frames AI less as a gimmick and more as a practical way to shop smarter, particularly when money is tight and every dollar is under scrutiny.

Crucially, the adoption Zip describes is concentrated in research and comparison rather than in the act of buying. Shoppers appear happy to let a machine gather and organise information, but far more hesitant to let it reach into their wallet. That distinction is the heart of the story, and it is where the more interesting tensions sit.

Two impulses pulling in opposite directions

The first viewpoint is the optimistic one, and it belongs largely to the platforms and retailers. For businesses like Zip, AI-assisted shopping promises better-informed customers who arrive at checkout with more confidence and fewer regrets, which in theory means fewer returns and more repeat custom. If AI can help someone choose the right product the first time, that is good for the shopper and good for the merchant. It also plays neatly into the buy-now-pay-later model, where reducing buyer’s remorse is close to a commercial imperative.

The second viewpoint is the cautious one, and it belongs to consumers themselves. The clear signal in the research is that Australians want to stay in control. They are willing to be advised, but not automated. That reluctance is well founded. AI tools can be confidently wrong, can carry hidden commercial incentives in the products they surface, and can nudge people towards a purchase in ways that are not always transparent. The idea of an agent that not only recommends but actually buys on your behalf remains a bridge most shoppers are not ready to cross.

Consumer advocates have raised similar concerns whenever automation creeps closer to the point of sale. The worry is not that AI helps people compare, but that the line between helpful suggestion and subtle steering becomes blurry, especially when the assistant is built or funded by a party with a stake in the outcome. Trust, in other words, is doing a lot of heavy lifting, and it is easily lost.

What it means for Australia

For the local market, the findings carry weight beyond a single company’s customer base. Australia has one of the world’s most enthusiastic online-shopping populations and an unusually mature buy-now-pay-later sector, so behavioural shifts here tend to show up quickly in the wider retail economy. If AI-assisted research becomes the default first step, retailers will need to think hard about how their products are described, reviewed and surfaced, because increasingly it may be an AI, not a human, doing the initial reading.

There is a regulatory dimension too. Australian authorities have been sharpening their focus on how AI is deployed in consumer-facing settings, and shopping is a natural flashpoint. Questions about transparency, about whether a recommendation is genuinely neutral or quietly sponsored, and about how consumer data feeds these tools, are all live issues. The federal push around AI governance, including work flowing out of the new national AI office, means retailers cannot assume that today’s light-touch environment will last. Getting ahead of disclosure and fairness expectations now is likely to be cheaper than retrofitting them later.

The desire to stay in control also hints at where the commercial limits sit. Fully autonomous shopping agents, the kind that browse, decide and buy without a human pressing the button, may be technically within reach, but the Zip research suggests Australian consumers are not clamouring for them. Any business betting heavily on agentic commerce in this market will need to reckon with a public that still wants its hand on the wheel.

What happens next

Expect the big retailers and marketplaces to lean further into AI-guided discovery over the coming year, embedding assistants directly into their apps and websites rather than leaving shoppers to bounce out to a general chatbot. The competitive advantage lies in keeping the customer inside your own ecosystem while the AI does the comparing, and that is a prize worth chasing.

For payment providers, the near-term opportunity is narrower but real: using AI to help customers understand affordability and repayment before they commit, which sits comfortably inside the “smarter, in control” framing the research leans on. The harder, longer question is whether Australians ever grow comfortable letting AI complete a purchase on their behalf, and on current evidence, that day is still some way off.

The takeaway from Zip’s numbers is less about a technology arriving than about how Australians are choosing to use it. They are treating AI as a research assistant they can direct, not an agent they will obey. For retailers, fintechs and regulators alike, respecting that boundary may prove just as important as building the tools in the first place.
